The HP keyboard I use at work is perfectly functional, just really loud. The space bar especially…and it’s slowly getting on my nerves. Short of replacing it (can’t do since it’s company issued) or stuffing tissues in between each key, is there any solution? I figure I’ll have to learn to ignore it, but I’m holding out hope…
AFAIK there’s not really much you can do unless you’ve got a very specific type keyboard (there are ways to quieten the old school - and usually VERY loud - buckling spring switches, for example).
On “modern” and cheap keyboards, most of the noise is due to rattling of the keys and resonance of the light plastic keyboard case. If the noise is really that annoying, even with a company issued board, why can’t you just replace it with one you got yourself? It’s not like keyboards are prestigious objects in most companies.
You’d be surprised how effective a little shock-absorption under the keyboard can sometimes be. Have any old mousepads lying around? Try cutting out little feet for your keyboard.
I am not sure I understand the “company issued” comment either unless maybe it is a shared computer. Every office of any size I have ever worked in has spare keyboards all over the place for the taking. They accumulate over time. Just swap it for a different type. You could also say that you need another one for ergonomic purposes and tell them to get you one or let you bring one in yourself.
Have you tried cleaning it? Even just turning it upside down over a newspaper and banging on the bottom?
I’ve seen cases where debris inside the keyboard was making it noisier. (It’s astounding the amount of junk that can come out from inside a keyboard!)
How about a quiet keyboard, like an IBM Model M?
Well, I tried cleaning it and I think that made it louder! Placing something underneath wouldn’t do much as it’s a sturdy keyboard - the individual keys are the culprit.
I work in a small office that’s part of a larger company. To get a new anything we have to go through IT, and it’s not an easy or quick process. We just don’t have spare keyboards and since they’re all the same model, switching just nets me another loud one. Buying my own would be an option, but it just doesn’t bug me enough to shell out $50.
So…I took off the space bar and shoved some tissue in the little hole there, then put it back on. It’s slightly quieter. That’s enough for now.
I’m off to read Poe’s “The Telltale Heart”…
