Cecil notes that Richard Berry’s actual lyrics to “Louie Louie” are hardly obscene, and none too brilliant either. He could have added “derivative”: much of the situation and even the dialect humor is derived from that other Berry, Chuck, and his 1956 song “Havana Moon.”
Is this the column?

What are the REAL lyrics to “Louie Louie”?
Say, you know, if we had one more post, we’d have enough people to play bridge. No, wait a minute, I’m here twice. Okay, I’ll be dummy.
While we’re waiting for somebody else to show up, can I nominate this thread for Threadspotting?

I wish that the answer had included the trivia that several hundred enthusiasts (note that I did NOT say that anyone could sing, or that they knew the lyrics) once gathered on the steps of the Washington State Capital in Olympia, singing “Louie, Louie”, as part of a movement to have the song declared to be the Official State Song. While this attempt failed miserably, it was indeed a symbol of the monumental proportions achieved by the mere rumor of “dirty” lyrics and has stood the test of time, as I know of no other such attempt.
