love is...

The necrophilia thread reminded me (as necrophilia always does) of the love is… cartoons of the '70s.

Anyone remember those?

Remember? Heck they’re still around (creepy as they are).

Yes, I remember them well. I was not really a big fan.

Love is…

Love Is…

Love Is…

Don’t care for it.

Why does necrophilia remind you of those? Did you mean paedophilia?

I think those cartoons put me off freckles for life.

Would that I could forget those naked, grinning, genital-lacking gnomes. They give me the heebie-jeebies.

I just had a look at the Wikipedia article. The background to the cartoons is pretty sad, actually. The original cartoonist’s husband (on whom the male character is clearly based) died less than five years after they married, and she stopped drawing it when he became ill. Since then it’s been contracted out to some other cartoonist.

I still think they suck though.

From the other thread:

Ha! I was too big a chicken to announce to the world earlier today when I saw this thread (which at the time had no replies) that I had forgotten all about these cartoons, and how much I detest them. Should’ve been more brave. Lordy they’re awful.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no!

Love is, higher than a mountain.

Love Ain’t Nothin’ But Sex Misspelled.

Love is a battlefield.

Love is messier than a used kleenex.

“You know what you two need? A little comic strip called “Love Is…”. It’s about two naked eight-year-olds who are married.” - Homer Simpson

…I don’t get it. I read through a whole bunch of them and they seem to be just as bad, if not worse, than those cheaper-than-average non-brand greeting cards you get at crappy bodegas in a terrible part of town. And yet, “at the height of their popularity in the 1970s the cartoons were earning Casali £4-5 million annually”.
