Love: The Straight Dope

I love the Dope because the folks here, although very diverse, seem to be a bunch of friends. You talk about things that I don’t talk about with my friends, and you are knowledgeable and mostly reasonable.

Confession - I’ve been “nerdy” all my life, and most of us here have a wide stripe of nerdiness underneath it all. After all, you write well on an enormously wide range of topics, and are tolerant in seeking knowledge, so thank you.

I love the fact that everything is very neat and organized with correct grammar and spelling.

I love the intelligence here.

I love the excellent moderation here.

I love the advice here.

I love being able to post long replies and threads without people bitching at you (in Yahoo! Answers, people bitch at your post being too long way too much).

I love when I look at a thread title and there is a crazy-ass misspelling/typo and then look to see who the OP is and yep, it’s ralph124c.

I don’t particularly agree with the content of his posts, and I sure as heck don’t like horribly mangled thread titles, and he’s been warned about it several times…but he’s so consistent I just have to laugh. Sort of like how George Bailey eventually appreciates the broken bannister knob at his stupid old house once he’s had his epiphany in It’s A Wonderful Life.

E. All of the above

Plus Hopeless Doper Crushes, of course.

pats hair Why thank you, darlink!

Oh, you have no idea…

I don’t have a crush on Ellen Cherry. I kind of want her to be my mom, though. She sounds like a really cool mom. She’d probably bake and everything.

I love that my mom now asks me what the Dopers think about a particular topic or if they have advice on a problem.

I love that we really can talk about just about anything, and talk about it with precise terms, mostly objective viewpoints, and that people can do honest Devil’s Advocation.

I love that a user I’ve locked horns with in GD about a political topic will turn around and offer me commiseration and support in MPSIMS.

I love that I can retell Doper stories to my IRL friends. In fact, I had three female friends in helpless gales of laughter retelling stories from the classic weird sex stories thread. “Oink! Oink oink!”

I love the way the Dope helps me figure things out about myself.

I love how much it has required me to mature emotionally over the years.

I love the advice. I’ve gotten so many great ideas here. This is truly a pragmatist’s forum.

I love how two people can be roasting one another in the Pit while bantering with one another in MPSIMS.

I love the Dopefests. Every Dopefest I have ever attended (Michigan, NYC and Philly) has been wicked awesome, and has led me to great people who have become a regular part of my life.

I love the drama. Oh, god do I love the drama. And the best part is, at the end of it all we still have each other. Things happen, but somehow we all hang together. It’s like a family - plenty of snark from day to day, but we always step it up when it matters.

So you love it when someone pops you, Cherry.

I’ve been waiting for yonks to use that here.

Add in some Dove Dark and I guess that makes, … naw, a bit much.

How about I be your slightly older sister? Cause I’m so youthful and fresh and down with the current lingo. Twenty-three skidoo!

Mom. : rolls eyes :

I love that it doesn’t matter what the subject matter of a thread, someone always posts something silly and lighthearted. I adore “the silly”.

I just got rick-rolled in another forum. Without ya’ll, I would not have known the word for it. <sniffle> I love you guys! Thanks!

This, too. In real life I’m not quite so accepting of people. If someone is outspoken and passionate about politics, religion, or some other polarizing topic that is in opposition to my beliefs, I tend to assume the other aspects of their lives follow and avoid them. But here, I can read someone with a POV that I find offensive in one forum and appreciate their insight about another topic. I’m “friends” here with people I wouldn’t be friends with in real life, and I get to appreciate input from people I might have never interacted with.

And calling bullshit is frequently constructive here because an opposing view, cite, or some other supporting information usually follows. In real life these kinds of heated discussions could escalate to violence. Here, opposing view points serve to balance a discussion.

You have no idea [/Klaus von Bulow]

When come back bring Tau/2*3 ?

I love this place because even the most cynical and snarky of us wouldn’t post here if they too didn’t love it too.

But mainly I’m here for the free coffee.
