Low popularity of Manchester United on Facebook

I was just wandering through Facebook and I was looking up some professional sports teams’ pages and I noticed something about the numbers of how many people “liked” certain pages –

Dallas Cowboys – 873,470
New York Yankees – 1,753,861
Boston Celtics – 1,220,453
Liverpool F.C. - 1,874,928
Chelsea F.C. – 1,186,043
Manchester United – 97,041

I thought Manchester United was the most popular professional sports team in the world. Why might their “like” figure be so low?

Because North America is overrepresented in the Facebook population, which is notoriously unconcerned with soccer.

So Liverpool and Chelsea are North American institutions now?

Chelsea has about 12 times the numbers of Manchester United and Liverpool has about 20 times. Maybe Man. U. supporters aren’t internet savvy.

Struggles to resist urge to say something derogatory about northerners

The figures do seem odd. Perhaps they were a bit late getting their Facebook page started?

I don’t know why the figures on FB are so low, but Man. United are reputed to have at least 70 million fans worldwide, so I doubt they are too concerned.

Northerners? I thought most Man Utd fans were Southerners!

I also think I saw on the Nike Soccer page that ManU just started their official, actually run by the team page recently. As in after the WC.
