Lowell Ganz/ Terry Wogan / Robots (2005)

I saw Robots at the cinema (in the UK) and I have it (well, my kids have it) on DVD (UK R2 PAL); I appear to have been under the mistaken impression that Terry Wogan provided the voice for Mr Gasket (the impotent robot helplessly suspended from chains in the chop shop). IMDB lists this character as being voiced by Lowell Ganz - who has quite an extensive filmography, but I can’t place him at the moment.

Am I merely imagining things? Does he sound a bit like Terry Wogan in his other films? Or is it the case that the UK release of this movie has a slightly different voice cast? (I know it isn’t the same studio, but Shrek 2 did this; the barmaid in the UK version was Jonathan Ross, as opposed to Larry King in the US release)

Ganz is part of the writing team of Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandell, who wrote films like **Parenthood, City Slickers,[b/] and A League of Their Own (he also wrote Robots). His acting appearances were generally bit parts, so it’s not surprising you don’t place him. I don’t know if he had more than a line or two for any of his previous appearances, so it’s hard to say what he sounds like from that.

I don’t see any reason why they’d redo the voices. It might make sense if the joke involved recognizing the voice (Larry King is instantly recognizable in the US, but probably not in the UK), but since no one in the US (other than those who knew him) would recognize Ganz, there’s no reason to redub.

Hmm. I’m at home now and I just checked the end titles on my DVD; Mr Gasket is voiced by Terry Wogan on this release; he’s not credited at all on IMDB. There a few other names that I think are probably little-known in the USA - Cat Deeley, Chris Moyles, Eammon Holmes, that I also cannot find credited on the IMDB listing (or rather, are credited to other names on IMDB.
