Luka Rocco Magnotta

Except, not. The reason she got a plea deal was that they didn’t have enough evidence against Bernardo to convict without her testimony. They didn’t find the tapes of the crimes until well after the conviction. They may have had enough evidence in the Scarborough rapes to convict him on that, but not the murders.

Human hand and foot mailed to two schools in Vancouver. They don’t know yet if Magnotta is responsible for them. Dare I say I hope so?

Ah, well, those may have been mine. :o

I hope so, too. We first heard of this from a neighbor who works for Canada Post - they shut the whole depot down where the packages were sorted.

I am curious about the timeline - if they were mailed by Magnotta, the very latest they could have been put in the post was eight days ago. I know regular post can be up to nine days, but when I send parcels regular post to Québec, I generally expect them to be there within a week.

The clearest connection they have with Magnotta to Vancouver is he owed on a car loan out here. Why local schools?

Obviously, really hoping there’s only one victim and one perpetrator, but… WTF?

he also mailed a human foot to the headquarters of the Canadian Conservative Party. So I have a question about that, related to Canadian law.

Here in Minnesota, as a Party Treasurer, the Campaign Finance Board requires me to report all contributions to the party, including in-kind (non-monetary) donations of goods or services. So is the Conservative Party required to report this donation?

And how do they set a value on it? (I have seen various online articles about the value of a human body, but the amounts stated vary widely. And wouldn’t just a single foot, without the rest of the body, have greatly reduced value? Perhaps that would reduce the value to below the reporting minimum.)

The package was addressed to the prime minister, so I don’t think it counts as a contribution to the party. (If it did, it would depend on how long the package was–the going rate is a dollar a foot. )

I’m curious about the timeline too. Maybe some kid ripped off a morgue or medical lab or something.

Looks like they are the missing body parts: Luka Magnotta: Body parts sent to Vancouver schools headed back to Montreal

However, the head is apparently still missing. I hate to think who’s going to get that surprise.

I’m glad the police gave us a ‘heads up’ on that one…

Mea culpa, didn’t see that in the other thread. Thanks for the info.

Well I’m never shipping body parts through the Canadian post. Takes forever!

Well, they’ve found the head.

He’s in detention awaiting trial next year? Why so long?

Under Canadian law, a trial on a murder charge normally involves a preliminary inquiry before a Provincial Court judge, to confirm that the Crown has enough evidence to warrant a full trial - the decision to go to trial on a murder case is not left solely to the decision of the police and the Crown prosecutor.

The prelim also gives the defence an opportunity to assess the evidence against the accused, the credibility of witnesses, and so on.

If the Provincial Court judge commits him to stand trial, the trial will be in the Superior Court of Quebec. That would likely be next year.

Out of curiosity I checked out the website he posted the video to. The thing I was fascinated by was the strange congruence of seemingly unrelated ideologies. Apparently, people into gore are also Holocaust deniers, and anti circumcision. I can see how the latter two are related to each other but… I know that Holocaust denial is rooted in antisemitism, but it at least has the façade of disbelief in evil on such a large scale. But the whole website is basically photographic proof of large scale inhumanity. It’s an odd pairing.

Update: last month, he was committed to stand trial on first degree murder charges. Trial date has been set for September, 2014, because the court calendar in Montreal is full and that was the earliest available block of two months, the expected length of the trial. Defence counsel is musing on challenging the committal on first degree, arguing that the evidence produced by the Crown at the prelim only supports a second degree charge.
