Looks like BelZarak has been lurking longest so far.

The only way to beat david8686a@netscape.net’s record of * Join Date: Jan 2004 Posts: 1* is to have been lurking since before Jan/2004 and to make this your first post! Hard to do!

Thanks so much, Lurkers, for playing along. Velly intellesting.

Neat idea!

Lurky Lurkerson here. I’ve been reading thses boards for YEARS and only just had the niblets to join and start posting. I keep thinking of all the great topics that I wanted to contribute to but chickened out. Would it be wrong to reopen a post from 1999?

It took me like ten minutes to work up the nerve to post in a lurker thread. So pathetic. Oh, well.

Count me in amongst the lurkers. I read the board daily but I’m not much of a poster.

Is the word “lurk” starting to sound sort of naughty to anyone else?
Or is that just me, and my dirty mind.

I think the word “lurk” does have an overtone of “voyeurism” attached. That’s just the way it strikes me, and I’m ready to accept that others don’t have that overtone attached. Perhaps “observer” is a bit less tainted. Maybe even “reader” is still less negatively biased.

But in the spirit of the OP, I had hoped to use the term as a measure of “minimal posting at SDMB” without the overtones producing a negative bias. It’s just that the term “lurker” has become fairly common here to indicate “non-posters.”

I don’t mean to offend or to express any value judgments with my use of the term, in spite of my willingness to admit the “naughty” overtone it may carry.

Oh I’m sorry - I didn’t mean it quite like that.
I meant more in the way a word repeated over and over starts to lose its meaning and just sound like gibberish, and in this case, to me and my dirty mind, it’s started sounding like kinda sexual gibberish. But ya know? It really probably is just me…

Yeah! Now that you mention it. Lots of words like that. But I’d bet it’s not “just you.”

Another lurker checking in.

I love to read here, but don’t usually have much to say.

Well, for me, I usually have things I’d like to say, but by the time I type it out, recheck my spelling and grammar 50 or 60 times ('cause you know how sometimes people will pounce on you for spelling something wrong or using then instead of than), and then upon the preview discover that someone else has posted pretty much exactly what I was going to say, I just end up deleting it.
I also mostly stick to MPSIMS if I do post because it’s like a shallow pool and Great Debates and the Pit are like oceans. I am afraid of the waves drowning me in there.

But other than that, I really enjoy reading the posts and I even have a fantasy that other posters like Hal Briston, Shirley Ujest, and Vunderbob and others of their caliber know who I am and wonder to themselves “What would swanky glue think about this topic?” or “I hope swanky glue gives us her .02. She’s a great gal”

Then I realize that I am only a legend in my own mind and those people don’t have a clue who I am because I almost never post anything of real value and I am ashamed of myself. Then I log off the computer and go eat ice cream.

swanky_glue, I like the spirit of your latest post. Here’s a little challenge for you: right now, whatever it is on your mind besides this thread, go immediately to MPSIMS main forum page and click on “New Thread” and post something about your idea or thought or frame of mind or whatever you want to call it.

It will elevate your sense of self and belonging more than any other action you can take. Getting replies will be icing on the cake, but stepping out with a thread of your own (I haven’t even checked to see if you have already done this) can give you a real thrill.

I’d be willing to bet those folks you admire will respond to you if your thread is provocative, funny, or weird. And MPSIMS is just the place for that sort of thing.

I will take that challenge. You betcha…(and i did start a thread, just once, but it mentioned my post count and was thusly shut down. I should have known better, but that’s ok too)

Anyway, I am comtemplating my new thread as we speak.

Thanks for the challenge.

I’ll see you in the other thread, which I will start shortly.

I’ve been here longer than most of the moderators, and this is my 219th post, I believe? That’s slightly less than 3 posts a month.

…I’m actually not sure whether that makes me extremely lurky or a candidate for major glaring and rolleyes from the real lurkers.

I love to read all the information here but normally do not have anything to add to the discussion.

I’m a lurker by nature, but I find myself posting more and more these days.

The first ever thread I read here was about WallyM7 being scared by a friend’s hampster and he threw it at the celieng and died.

Finally I get around to posting…
RIP WallyM7
