God Damn that is the worst part about incarceration. I can deal with being told when to get up, when to eat, etc., but all that time with nothing to do will make you nutty.
ho-lee shit.
He’s like the energizer bunny of meltdowns.
I’d be interested to hear more about this, preferably not in this thread.
Also any views on Robert Nairac and/or Freddie Scappaticci.
Or the winner of that “best mod quote” thread over in ATMB.
Well lust4life would be the last person to ask imho. Although it’s about the only remotely accurate thing he’s said in this thread.
I think he deserves a fair hearing… obviously there’s been some knee-jerk responses from him in this thread but IMHO he seems to be fairly clued up about the (now hopefully over forever) “Troubles”.
Cheers mate, and as a Tottenham supporter it’s nice to communicate with someone who has more reason to hate Thierry Henri than me…
He is in his bollix. He thinks I’m in the IRA or an IRA supporter. He has posted inaccurately about the Troubles numerous times and I’ve corrected him and he has shrugged it off and defamed me and my family. His is a narrow-minded and partially fabricated reading of the events of those years. Seriously, not with a barge pole. There are other posters here who could give you good insight into the Troubles. He’s possibly the worst informed person on the topic I’ve ever encountered. Although, perhaps, he provides insight into a certain POV.
I’m still interested to hear what Lust4Life has got to say…
BTW, I don’t subscribe to that ’ ‘certain POV’
Ticket to watch Celtic to beat Barcelona… thirty quid.
A wee heavy… Six quid
Rangers drawing at Annan Athletic… Priceless
My reading of the situation is that, in Lust4Life’s mind, Irish person = IRA supporter. It is possible that I’m misreading him and he merely thinks Northern Irish person = IRA supporter, or Irish Protestant = IRA supporter, but in any case it’s a simplistic, insulting, ignorant, broad-brush perspective.
Well it would be Irish Catholic = IRA supporter but I think his particular beef is with Irish or other commenters who don’t hold fast to his inane, simplistic view of the Troubles and its causes.
Oops, you’re right. On both counts.
Someone who had served there with the constant threat of a snipers bullet or a bomb might have the view that it’s you who have the “simplistic, insulting, ignorant, broad-brush perspective.”
Just saying… I’ve never been in the military FTR…
Well if you take on face value what that drunken idiot says he served in NI but since he lies about me why should I think he doesn’t lie about himself? But more to the point, even if he has that experience he seems allergic to providing cites for things he posts as fact. Facts are the same regardless of whether you were directly involved in an event or not.
Really? You’re saying that the Troubles can be boiled down to a simple Us vs. Them situation, in which you’re either with us or against us? That there were no individuals with conflicted loyalties, no families divided as to how strongly they held their positions, no disagreements over what level of violence was necessary or acceptable, if any?
Personally, I abhor violence, and I find any violence against civilians particularly unacceptable whether conducted by a military, paramilitary, terrorist organization, or anybody else. So I have no sympathy for the people who perpetuated those acts during the Troubles, and no sympathy for the people who supported the violent ones. I do, however, see that the colonization of Ireland, with the attendant cultural imperialism and deliberate destruction of the indigenous language and culture (not to mention the poverty, misery, and death of a large number of Irish), is a pretty terrible crime in its own right, and one that endured for many centuries. A lot of cultural institutions were so thoroughly destroyed that they cannot be brought back. So neither side comes out well.
In the Irish situation, I think the only honest thing to do is admit that it’s extraordinarily complex, and neither side is in the right. The Irish people, on both sides, seem to be coming to terms with it and moving forward, so who am I to second-guess them?
I’m not taking him on face value.
I’m not a mug, I’d just like to hear his view of events away from The Pit…
I’d like to hear your’s too…
Anyway… What was it that Zebedee used to say?
[Work in the morning…]
You said he “seemed to be fairly clued up on the Troubles”. Anyway, I’ll give you my views anytime you like but not in this particular thread.
Thanks Grandpa! That’s exactly what people told The Beatles!
If old crusty buggers like you hate it, then I’m gonna be more popular than Jesus!
I’m gonna be a big STAR!!
No. I’m saying soldiers who served there with the constant threat from a bomb or a snipers bullet would have a rather different perspective from non-combatants like (I presume) you and me.
Can’t argue with that…
I know there are still splinter groups active, but hopefully we’ll see a long term peace and a political solution.
What, Zebedee?
I only remember him saying “Boing, Time For Bed”…
(I’m hoping you had “The Magic Roundabout” in Ireland… if not, you’ll probably think I need to be sectioned…)
Seriously though, I’ll see if Lust4Life wants to reply to my questions.
I’ve known people who have served in NI, and they can be very strongly anti Irish.
I’m not saying it’s right, but I can understand their hostility, given that they may have been shot at or their mates have been killed.
I hope you don’t get the impression that I’m anti-Irish, because thar’s far from the truth.
Personally, I think a united Ireland would be the best solution, although, not being Irish I don’t think my opinion should hold any weight…
Regards,
mascaroni.
I’m not very good at this pitting stuf[…
Tee heee, you’re all coming out of the woodwork.
Come, come there must be at least one of you can think of a withering comment to cut my arrogance down to size ?
Or even someone with perhaps a cutting remark at a stretch?
l feel singulary unwithered, not to say uncut .
I would say that I was surprised at your poor performance, both as individuals and a group.
But you only lived down to my estimation.
You realy, really must try harder if you’re practicing recreational bullying
The whole mob of you couldn’t intimidate an elderly, somewhat short sighted, and overweight goldfish.
Still its always good to, not only know who the cowards are, but to get them in their stupidity, to display it before all of the world.
Nice display everyone !
