Luxuries you don't enjoy

This runs the risk of being a little Dad-like, or even Grandpappyish, but here goes. I don’t enjoy those big, soft, heavy, luxurious hotel-style towels. Give me something super thin and scratchy from the YMCA instead, or the car wash.

Caviar. Bleh.

Hey grandpa!

Sorry I need the plushy ones.

Small plates of food at a very expensive/fancy restaurant. If I’m paying $100 a head, I expect to be well satiated after a meal. Also, don’t show me a wine list, with $200 bottles of wine on it, unless I ask for one. I’ll just have water please.

At Costco, you pay the super-thin,scratchy price. I got a pair for only about 20 bucks. More than a year later, they’re still almost like new.

Never had them but the idea of escargot just grosses me out.

Not today.

@Briny_Deep I’m with you. I don’t use terrycloth towels. Gitchyseff a few of these:

Thin fabric, highly absorbent, huge size, dry quickly. These are my bath towels. I’ve got about a dozen.

How about an S-Cargo?

I love those Turkish towels too. But they are not really durable enough for the family. So I hoard my secret stash.

The best part of escargot is dipping bread in the garlic butter after you’ve eaten all the pencil erasers.

I can see that garlic butter being great. But there’s snail slime in there. I just know it.

I have never cared for lobster and I do like seafood

I prefer shrimp and fried clams.

I avoid drive-thrus.

What all you snail-haters might like is “shrimp-cargot”. Index-finger sized peeled shrimp cooked & served like escargot.

Same hot crockery serving dish with the 6 wells full of liquid garlic herb butter. Same bread or puff pastry for dipping. But instead of snails, each well has a broiled or grilled shrimp.

Darn good.

I have no interest in spa treatments or massages.

I have eaten and very much like lobster and escargot.

However, I was not impressed by caviar. It was many moons ago when I had it; I may give it another chance someday.

One thing I absolutely don’t care for is designer clothing and I wouldn’t buy high-end brands if I did have the money to spend on them. If I were wealthy enough to order a Rolex, I would still buy instead a quality watch of a different brand that would mark me out as comfortably middle class.

A moot point as I don’t drive as it is (I got a driver’s license late in life, proved to be a distracted and not completely safe driver, and decided it would be wiser not to do it in the future), but if I did drive and could afford it, I wouldn’t invest in a sports car. They’re all right to look at when someone else is driving. I’d buy an old El Camino, preferably a 1978 Black Knight (second choice: a 1976 or 1977 SS or Conquista). That’s a car for a salt-of-the-earth man’s man. Not for one who wants to flaunt his wealth.

I’ll add another +1 for caviar. I’ve had it, and it’s okay, but not enough to be worth a fraction of the price.

Similarly, truffles (the fungus type, not the chocolate type). It’s okay, very earthy (to my tastes), but not a luxury I’m attracted too.

Gold foil (for food). I mean really, sure, it looks nice, and it’s not that expensive given it’s mass, but it’s luxury for luxury’s sake. No flavor added, minimal (but not zero) additional visual appeal, and a high premium for it. Especially (!) when you add it to something that’s NOT supposed to be a special food, like some specialty upscale burgers.

A semi-plus one to @themapleleaf’s comment on sports cars. I mean, I get the visual appeal, but I drive soley to get from place to place. Performance, past being able to drive at speeds on the US interstates, is useless. Now, I can see some appeal in the Grand Touring types, where you have ample power but all the extra comforts and perks, but I’d never pay the price.

Take the cash, put in a CD, use the results to have someone drive me everywhere I need to go.

I will bet that if you got some $700 T-shirts, most people would not notice, unless the designer’s logo were too conspicuous.

I like good clothes, though.

This is why I love the baked garlic shrimp at a local restaurant. It’s served exactly like escargot, with nice fresh warm crusty bread for dipping into the cavities of the serving dish, but with shrimp instead of disgusting snails!

Snails are disgusting while people eat crayfish and clams and stuff like that? The taste of snails is not even that powerful.
