Luxuries you don't enjoy

Yup. Photos prove I don’t care about my hair, and I avoid mirrors.

Went for a bike ride today, just cruising around the hood on non busy streets. It’s really nice. It has a built in bell (ring, ring ring) in the left hand grip that I will start using so I become that weird old guy in the neighborhood.

Ohhh. Playing cards in the wheels.

I kinda want to be that weird old guy. I have all the qualifications, so…

Better the weird old guy than the crazy old guy or even worse, the creepy old guy.

Add me to the “don’t get the appeal of filet mignon” list. Soft, mushy, not a lot of flavor, and certainly not for the price. Give me a rib eye.

I’m 65. Cyndi Lauper just wanted to have fun. Me too.

That’s the appeal. It’s extremely tender. I will 100% choose that over any other cut all the time, if price is not a concern or if I am buying steak to cook.

It verges on unpleasantly tender to me. I still have teeth.

Agree. Tender, great taste. But this depends on your butcher you get it from. Krogers, maybe not so much.

We may cook a steak once or twice a month, so cost is not an issue.

And the chef that cooks it.

Jewelry sure is pretty. I don’t want to wear any. And I sure as hell don’t see the sense in paying lots of money for it. Shiny shit, whoopee.

I was a filet guy for years, until I learned how much more flavor a good ribeye has. A prime ribeye is about as flavorful as it gets. My seasoning consists of a little salt and pepper, a rub of good olive oil and maybe just a sprinkle of lemon juice. Doesn’t need anything else, and certainly not steak sauce or ::shudder:: ketchup.

As far as luxuries I don’t enjoy - cigars, even if they are Cuban, high end colognes (Drakken Noir is as high as I’ll go in price), and oysters. I used to love oysters on the half-shell, then I got a norovirus from eating them, and that ended any desire to ever eat them again. Three days of hell, that was.

I still like oysters. I bought some today. But i haven’t (yet) gotten sick from them.

I did complete a hepatitis A vaccine sequence because i like oysters.

I wish you the best of luck. I adored them raw, but I’m not ready to spin that roulette wheel again. I’d still eat them cooked though. Oysters Rockefeller is delicious, but not so easy to find anymore.

Can you easily afford it? Does it make you happy? Then, no- not dumb.

So then you dont “I eat filet mignon seven times a day” ? (Weird Al)

I prefer Porterhouse steak- slightly. T-bone, Porterhouse, Rib steak, all are similar cuts.

I concur- ecch- nasty- and i will eat them for survival reasons. (Boiled, if I can)

I made some nice soup once with a small can of Contadina and beach scrounging. A few crabs, limpets, clams, oysters, mussels and a couple small fish.

electronics and nifty apps. I don’t understand my work colleagues who are so excited about the latest iPhone feature, which is usually bloat that I don’t think anyone really wanted, or excited to try the latest fly-by-night app that will go bankrupt next year.

I do keep my iPhone upgraded, but that’s only because the experience gets miserable the farther behind you get. I depend on my phone for a lot of practical stuff and I don’t want to have to fiddle with it.

Personally I can’t stand raw oysters because texture and I don’t really love strong brininess, but I’ve always had a mild interest in trying Oysters Rockefeller. But I never can seem to find them on a menu in a moment I feel like trying them. Or really I want someone else to order them, so I can try just one. I’ve resigned myself to the prospect it now may never happen. Oh, well :slightly_smiling_face:.

i voted for LBJ.

I had them in New Orleans. If you are ever there, you’ll find them.

Huh, why oysters Rockefeller?

I’ve had caviar which wasn’t even that good. Dad brought a container of it home from somewhere and had me be the guinea pig.

It was like trying to eat an eraser off a pencil. Same mouthfeel even!

I’ve had Goldschläger which is apparently a variant ( friend was showing off in the mid-to-late 90s ) and wasn’t super impressed. The spirit itself was spice-heavy, and while not my normal choice, wasn’t actively unpleasant. But the still does nothing other than deflate your wallet for questionable bragging rights.

Drink it if you like it, but the gold part is the most transitory sort of bling imaginable. And you’re not exactly able to recover it unless you have more free time, patience and greed than I ever will!

I had a buddy at work who had the same aversion to raw oysters that I did, but swore up and down that oysters Rockefeller were delicious the one time he tried them. After reading the description they sounded like something that might be tasty. But also might not be, so I’d rather sample them than pay for a plate for myself just in case I didn’t end up liking them.

It’s not like a bucket list item or anything, just the vague interest of someone who is usually iffy on oysters. Nothing more complicated than that .
