Lyrics that make you smile every time

Julia Nunes - The Debt

“I’ll never relate to your city peeps
cuz I do most of my thuggin’ on suburban streets.
I get terrified but I’m fine when I’m with you.”

And

Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma

“Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma?”

And

April Smith and The Great Picture Show - Drop Dead Gorgeous

“If you’re just drop dead gorgeous you should just drop dead.”

I feel the same way about “In The Summertime” by Mungo Jerry.

I said, “I’m so happy I could die”
She said, “Drop dead,” and left with another guy
That’s what you get if you go chasing after vengeance.
Ever since you got me punctured this has been my sentence.

-Elvis Costello, (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes

He must have…because the online lyric sheet I found had that and I corrected it!

Lots of clever turns of phrase in Warren Zevon’s songs. One of my favorites is from Genius

Or from Desperados Under The Eaves

Close it out with some lines from Mr. Bad Example

[[shortened excerpt]]

He does. I have this song on my running playlist so I’ve heard it about 384309 times (approximately) and he definitely says “pinch from the neck of Mr. Spock”.

  • Robert Palmer, Simply Irresistable.

A decent song; nothing great. But that line just does it for me…

ExTank – remember the copyright, pls. – if you want to supply the full lyrics to a song, provide a link to where they are elsewhere, don’t post them directly.

Thanks,

When quoting song lyrics, please remember the SDMB’s policy and don’t quote more than about four lines from songs that are under copyright. Thanks.

Also from Warren Zevon’s ‘Mr. Bad Example’:

I started as an altar boy, working at the church
Learning all my holy moves, doing some research
Which led me to a cash box, labeled “Children’s Fund”
I’d leave the change, and tuck the bills inside my cummerbund

To those not familiar, the narrator is lying, cheating, thief with no conscience. He rattles off a long string of dirty deeds he has done in his life. With that in mind, here is my favorite part of the song:

“Of course I went to law school…”
mmm

*You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot
“Merry Christmas” your arse, I pray God it’s our last ! *
The Pogues - Fairytale of New York

In “Things Have Changed,” Bob Dylan finishes singing the line “The next sixty seconds could be like an eternity” exactly one minute before the end of the song.

I always look over my shoulder when I hear Don Henley in “The Boys of Summer” sing, “Don’t look back/You can never look back.”

I’m sitting in the corner feeling glad,
Got no money coming in, but I can’t be sad:
That was the best cup of coffee I ever had.

Jethro Tull, “Inside”

Faith Hill, "This Kiss:

Cinderella said to Snow White,
“How does love go so off-course?
All I wanted was a white knight
With a good heart, soft touch, fast horse…”

This whole song is fun, but this part always makes me smile:

“And when it’s party time
Like 1999
I’ll party by myself
Because I’m such a special guy”

Weezer - Troublemaker

It’s spoken word, but it makes me smile every time.

King Missile, Jesus Was Way Cool

Jesus was way cool.
Everybody liked Jesus.

[Jesus] could’ve baked the most delicious cake in the world.

How could we get this far without some ICP?

When I fuck bitches ask what I’m tryna do
My nuts is people so I’m tryna stuff 'em in there too!

I suppose I missed the gist of the thread. There are some songs that make me smile in a wry sort of way, unlike the ones I’ve posted lyrics to. Those actually make me laugh.

Saw a bumper sticker, years ago, but it’s so applicable now I might have to hand-scrawl my own:

Well, I used to be disgusted…
But now I’m just amused.

“It’s a souvenir of a terrible year”
-The Sundays, “Here’s Where the Story Ends”

I think it’s impossible to NOT smile when she sings. Her voice is fantastic.

For me?

ANY line from ‘Summer In the City" by the Lovin’ Spoonful.

Ben Folds, “Rockin’ the Suburbs”

“I’m rockin’ the suburbs
Just like Michael Jackson did
I’m rockin’ the suburbs
Except that he was talented”
