M1 Garand Purchase

Friends,

Is it legal in the state of Pennsylvania to do a private purchase of an M1 Garand? The original owner had obtained it via the US government/military marksmanship program about fifteen years ago. Can a private citizen purchase it from the original owner? Are there any special forms that need submitted? I can't find anything specific in PA State gun laws. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

if I can remember correctly, the M1 is a simiautomatic rifle…I cant think of any special laws concerning rifles like that…my own WAG

I’d just stop by my local state police post and ask them.

The M-1 Garand is semi-auto, and if it came from the Director of Civilian Markmanship sales, will be ‘DE-MIL’ making it acceptable for sale to any qualified purchaser, depending on State and Federal regulations.

So: If PA permits private rifle sales, and you’re not prohibited from firearms ownership, you should be OK. Check with a local FFL (Federal Firearms License) dealer to be sure.

If you want to go directly to the DCM and buy your own M-1, here’s the adress:

Director of Civilian Marksmanship
20 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W.
Room 1205, Pulaski Building
Washington, D.C. 20314-0100

Be aware that its not entirely easy, but can be a great way to aquire a worthy rifle, which is also a historically significant collectable.

Are these those welded-back-together-after-being-cut-in-two rifles? Does the $250 pay for the rifle or just the approval to purchase?

My information from my previous post was out of date and incorrect. My sincere and humble appologies. DCM is no longer an Army-run opperation: The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1996 (TITLE XVI) created the Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice & Firearms Safety, Inc. (CPRPFS) to take over administration and promotion of the CMP. The CPRPFS is a tax exempt not-for-profit 501©(3) organization that derives its mission from public law.

Nope, these are the real, never destroyed, thing. Some of them are pretty battered, but all are at least “good” quality, mechanically. Militarily significant fixtures such as grenade cups and the like will not be present. $250 is the actual purchase price for a service grade “A” reciever. The lowest price for a complete rifle is $400 for a Danish issue “service grade” rifle. Match-grade weapons, are significantly more, and there are few for sale. Some may be re-barreled, so serial numbers may not match.

Please note that sales start and stop as bureaucracy and supply permit.
