I’m realizing that Patriot’s Day is the most half-assed holiday around. There seems to be a complete lack of standards as to what it means and who gets the day off.
My mail got delivered, because it is not a federal holiday. My trash did not get picked up, because it is a state holiday. Now everything gets bumped down a day. Not the end of the world, just requires some forethought.
My daughter’s day care was closed. My office, however, is not, so I was supposed to work. I could bring her to my mom’s house, but getting there will be a problem, because there is a parade running through her town. You know, to commemorate Revere’s ride and all, which is what this allegedly is all about, no? I’ll also have to find a different route to actually get to the office, because otherwise I would be trying to drive straight through the Boston Marathon. (Side note: it strikes me as funny that a lot of radio stations are broadcasting from bars near the marathon. At !0 am this morning, one DJ was imploring listeneres to come join her and enjoy a nice cold Budweiser. Come sit on your fat ass and expand your beer belly, all in the name of cheering on people who are participating in a rigorous physical competition. Anyhow…)
Fortunately (?), said daughter was sick, so I cancelled my work and stayed home to attend to her and call the pediatrician…
whose office is closed for the holiday.
Give me a nice, full-fledged holiday. This one sucks.
Same type of deal - it’s a state holiday, so many of the federal things were open, schools were open. State agencies were closed. Kind of weird. And of course, I had to work.
I hate to sound like I’m not truly honoring those “lesser holidays” when I say this, but if I don’t have a day off because of it, it sure doesn’t feel like a holiday to me!
Of course, it probably helps keep the poor working schmucks out of Boston and surrounding areas for the marathon! What a traffic nightmare that would be to try and go to lunch, leave for home, etc.
Yeah, Patriot’s Day is a dumb non-holiday, and one on which I had to work. Of course, I always forget it exists, because I only just moved to MA last summer.
Thank Og for the T, so I didn’t have to drive through the Marathon!
Well, I don’t have today off, although Pepper Mill and MilliCal do. On the other hand, I got off Good Friday and they didn’t (this is the first job I’ve had where I’ve had Good Friday off. The first time I’ve had it off since leaving Catholic School. Weird.)
IIRC, Maine celebrates Patriot’s Day, too (It used to be part of Massachusetts.)
If you’re looking for another one-state-only holiday, go to Utah on July 24 for Pioneer Day (a chance to use up your leftover fourth of July fireworks, and to see one odd parade.)
Yeah it is a kind of lame holiday. Although last year it gave us all an extra day to file our taxes
Luckily while my hubby had to work today he didn’t have to leave the house! When he drove into Cambridge every day it was a crap shoot as to how long it would take him to get home grumble I ruined more dinners!
One of my favorite things about going to school in Boston is getting Patriot’s Day off. Unfortunately, I was cheated out of an extra vacation day because Patriot’s Day and Easter Monday coincided this year. (Hooray for the Jesuit university, though, because I also had Holy Thursday and Good Friday off from classes.) It was sort of fun watching the Marathon run past my dormroom window, though.
