Mac compatible Digital cameras?

It’s kind of a silly question, but…how can I tell if a digital camera would be compatible with my Mac, or not?

I never see “System Requirements” listed on the digital cameras I see at Circuit City and the like. Are most, if not all, of them likely to be both PC and Mac compatible, or only certain models?

We have a Toshiba we bought at Costco. It works great with our Macs. It comes with a USB cord that when plugged into the camera and the Mac the pictures appear on the screen.
Good luck.

They’re all “Mac-compatible” as long as it’s got a USB connector. (They all do these days.)

My new Fuji F-700 6.3 megapixel camera worked right out of the box.

Did I mention it has 6.3 megapixels?

Some cameras will come with some photo album/photo editing software that will probably be PC format only. If you have just the camera plus USB cable you’ll be fine on a Mac or Linux.

I’ve tried several USB digital cameras, including Fujis and Kodaks with my trusty 500 Mhz iBook and Apple’s free iPhoto software, and it’s worked every time. However, here’s a link to Apple’s list of cameras known to be supported by iPhoto.

I have a Nikon 4300 and it works fine. I also have a Lexar multicard reader and was able to download photos from sister’s Olympus camera. That is two different media - compact flash and smart media. I have an imac 17" flat screen running OS 10.2.

Whatever camera you get you should get a card reader - saves time and batteries.

I never installed any software that came with my Olympus digital camera. I look at everything through Preview. If I really wanted to get crazy, I’d go with iPhoto.

I’ve had a series of Sony cameras, all of which have worked beautifully with my Macs. My memory stick reader is treated as an additional mounted disk, and I can simply drag and drop photos from it to any local directory.
