MacOS9 vs. Previous OS's

Recently I came across an issue with trying to edit the resource files of a particular Application extension/plug-in in this thread, and thank you rackensack and AudreyK for your help.

I forgot to actually check and make sure about he user license status of the file itself what with just having updated my network here, and upon doing so just now, found that what was originally a five user license for this QuarkXPress xtension, is able to be used on seven machines, no problem.

Here’s what happened, originally, I had three G3’s, a 9600 and 9500, and an 8500, plus a quadra… all running OS 8.1, except the quadra… that was running 7.x

Whenever there was a fifth version of Quark running this extension with a five user license, I would get a warning, and find the xtension automatically disabled. I attribute that to the programming in the xtension, looking for other versions of itself on the network with the same serial number.

However, the company that made this extension is long gone, not in business anymore, and years have gone by, and so have new MacOS’s come and gone as well. So, does OS9 read/recognize the network in such a different way than OS8.1 did that my extension can now run on 10 machines without a problem? I tested this three times this morning, and found no issues at all with user license. Does the xtension not read the network correctly through the new OS? Also, the xtension was designed for the previous version of Quark, but runs fine on this lates version, could that be another factor?

I’m at a loss to explain any of this to myself just as yet… Hoping to do some research and figure this out, any help would be appreciated.

Don’t worry rackensack, I will still not give up on figuring out if I can crack this code as well, I started, I might as well finish. Your’e right, I might learn something.

I forgot to mention that the network is now four G4’s, and three G3’s and one 9600 for kicks, plus some PC’s… etc. all Macs running OS9.0.4

I don’t think you’d get any answers to your question here. Maybe you’ll have better luck at the mac addict message board.
