Macs and .pdfs

I tried a search, but Mac and .pdf are both three letters.

Is there any way, on my Intel iMac, to open a .pdf without having to save it first? I open a lot of .pdfs, and it gets to be a pain to save them, then minimize my open window to find the .pdf on my desktop (I know about expose - I just don’t have it programmed into my trackball, so minimizing is faster), open it, then delete it so my desktop doesn’t look like it is a respository for .pdfs.

Thanks.

I have an older Mac (Powerbook) and I’m not quite sure what you mean. Do you mean when you access pdfs from internet domains? I find that some will open in a new tab/window, but others automatically download to the desktop.

Regarding pdfs emailed, they should just open up without you having to resave them.

An easier way to clear your desktop if you have lots of applications open is to click on a folder stored in the Dock, then click Desktop in the left hand column to see all the items on the Desktop in folder view. You could also store the Desktop folder in the Dock, for one less click.

Assuming you want to have the pdf open up in your browser, you need adobe acrobat viewer (freeware). You can then set the preferences to “open pdf in browser” and voila, no more saving pdfs. Personally I much prefer the interface of viewing them seperately, but to each his own.

Are you using Firefox? Apparently the Acrobat plugin doesn’t work in Firefox [see http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/OSX.html#Acrobat]. You should get PDF Browser Plugin: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/OSX.html#PDF.

Jumping onto the Firefox plugin bandwagon, this is what I use on both of my Macs and it’s great.
