Mad Men 2.2: Flight 1, Aug 3rd '08 (open spoilers)

Maybe I missed the explanation somewhere, but how is it that a woman as good-looking as Joan hasn’t been able to snag a husband yet? Or are her standards incredibly high?

Don was promoted and is a junior partner (no name on the building) last year, after Roger’s 2nd heart attack. His first task was to hire his replacement (Duck), so technically Duck works under him.

I believe that Don was Creative Director before his promotion, so I assume that Duck assumed some of Don’s previous responsibilities and some of Roger’s. Duck and Don both have executive input and appear to operate as equals, deferring only to Bert Cooper.

Well, none of the men in the office will propose because they know she’s slept with Paul, and they might know about Roger. It’s not that they want a virgin, but they wouldn’t be comfortable working with someone who’s slept with their wife.

I kinda wondered why Duck wanted Pete to pitch American Airlines for their ad business, which Pete declined to do due to having lost his dad on Flight 1.

Duck is pretty damn opaque, but my hunch is it wasn’t just that Pete was one of their better copywriters, but actually because Pete’s dad had died on an AA flight. It would have suggested that the firm really believed in AA.

Oh, absolutely. AA will feel an immediate connection with Pete, like he knows what they’re going through. I think the deal was unquestionably done the moment the AA rep found out Pete’s dad was on the plane, and Duck (how did I not know that was his name before this thread?) knew it would work out like that.

Don sells ideas to clients. Pete is in charge of keeping current clients happy and bringing in new ones. In season one he almost got fired for pitching an idea without Don knowing about it.

Duck is just in charge of people like Pete. His main job is to bring in clients so that they are willing to hear a presentation. Don takes care of the rest.

What about Cosgrove? Is the same as Pete?
