A Very Mad Men Christmas. It’s been a nice change of pace starting this season in late fall as opposed to late winter or spring like the first three seasons. Now let’s see the preview on AMC’s site has the closeted gay executive from Lucky Stikes (71% of SCDP’s revenue) being invited to the company Xmas pary at the last minute; is he the last minute visitor or will some other former character show up to cause major akwardness. I’d actually be very surprised if it does turn out to be who I think it is given Mad Men’s traditon red herring filled trailers.
I wonder if he’ll be asking where Sal is. And if so, will they bring him back?
I can only see the show after the fact via the Internet, but seeing as how Sal’s ouster is/was Wiener’s demonstration of how hardcore and unsentimental he intends to be re the show’s scripting I don’t think he’s coming back anytime soon.
I do think that Peggy will be after more Duck sauce this season. Lots and lots of Duck sauce.
They could have showed an entire hour of Joan in the conga line.
I was suprised to see Freddy again, and even more surprised that he didn’t fall off the wagon at the party. There’s so much delightful akwardness between him and Peggy. Glen’s moved on from mother to daughter. Who’s the actor playing Mark (Peggy’s boyfriend) and is he setting anybody else’s gaydar off? :dubious: I have an easier time buying Peggy as a vigin that him as a heterosexual. Until he started kissing Peggy I was wonder if she was his beard. And he seems really into Sweden (yes, I realize Sweden even more of a reputation as a livertine free love sexual paradise than it does now).
Don’s breaking one of his biggest rules (never fuck where you work); who’s that going to playout? And he even managed to cluelessly make her feel like a prostitute the morning after. I wonder if anyone else is going to start to suspect anything about Lee Garner, Jr after him making all the men sit on Roger’s lap? It would be intersting to see the partners’ reaction (Sterling in particular) if he ends up hitting on one of the straight men at SCDP.
Can someone point me to the link / name of that website that was mentioned during on of last season’s threads that featured a hilarious re-cap by a blogger/feature-write on the site? I’m kicking myself for not bookmarking it at the time, and now I can’t remember the name of any of it.
What they’re likely to think of him is that he’s a nasty control freak who knows how important his business is to them and what they’ll do to make him happy. Roger looked ready to tell him to fuck off. (And by the way, Don had a very visible five o’clock shadow during the party. He’s really letting himself go.) And did Lane Pryce say that his wife and son were in London and he was ready to join them? He seems like he’s sick of the business and ready to leave.
And one more thing. Would Doris Day be considered old in 1964? I thought she was still relatively youthful.
I liked this episode a lot, with the exception of the re-introduction of creepy Glenn. Stay far away Sally!! Plus, I thought it was a little heavy-handed with the “Daddy’s not here, so here’s Glenn’s entrance into Sally’s life.” Weird and I think they could have still had an interesting story with Sally becoming interested in boys during this upheaval without it being with psycopathic Glenn.
But the Christmas party made up for all of that, and Joan of course. Liked the interchange between Freddy and Peggy as well.

recaps

She was, but she was the virginal Girl Next Door, and young women didn’t necessarily want to emulate her. In 1964, some of us wanted to be like Natalie Wood, Tuesday Weld, Sandra Dee, maybe Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine.
My mom used Pond’s – thick, greasy stuff. My friends and I used Angel Face, also a Pond’s product but much lighter. I wonder if it’s still available. Good stuff.
I was squirming on my couch from awkwardness almost the entire hour. Every scene was more cringe-inducing than the next. Between all the “DON NOOOO” and “SALLY NOOOOOO” and “PEGGY NOOOOOO”, it was exhausting!
Those guys need to stop having office parties – nothing good ever comes of them.
Thanks for more entertaining links, but I just had a revelation and found the ones I was looking for; the website is ‘Unbound Edition’, but the author hasn’t done updates for this season. Here’s a sample:

I don’t think Don was clueless. I think he knew exactly how it would make her feel and did it anyway. As far as he was concerned pretending it never happened was more important than her feelings.
Regarding the D-bag from Lucky Strike, I forgot he was revealed as gay.
I thought for sure Roger was going to tell Lee Jr. to f-off, especially when Jr. put his arm around Jane. Figured it would be the last straw, but I guess given their dearth of clientele, he needs to keep the guy around.
Peggy’s guy is so clueless, it’s kind of funny.
[post-coitus]: “So… do you feel any different?”
Heh.
What happened to all the clients that were going to be brought with them? Like Pete Campbell’s clients?
Boy howdy, they shore did make Don look like a little shit. No ambiguity there, no allure of the Bad Boy, gorgeous exec. Hell, no allure at all. Even his staff thinks he’s pathetic.
Why on earth would Peggy pretend to be a virgin? I mean, I get the societal pressure, and maybe it’s just for this guy. But she doesn’t otherwise seem completely encased in the “old fashioned” ideas about women? Seems out of character.

I loved that Joan showed up to the Christmas party wearing the red dress tha Roger told her he liked.

To keep him at bay. She’s worried about getting pregnant again, although it doesn’t seem to stop her from doing the fuck-a-Duck.
Don’s becoming an anachronism and doesn’t realize it. The booze isn’t helping him with his lack of clarity of vision in the ad game. He rejects out of hand the psychology of making people buy what they don’t need, when it should be something that grabs his attention. Don’s headed for an epiphany that will require him to either stop feeling sorry for himself and pay attention to business, or to become just another version of Freddy.
Joan is amazing and I am not just talkikng about her figure. EWhatever the office is paying her it isn’t enough because she is almost too perfect an office manager or whatever her title is.

What I don’t get is why be so freaked out about pregnancy now? Why not with dear Duck? Was she just being self-destructive with Duck and now finds herself in a relationship with some meaning (even though she’s ambivalent)? The BF seems to be ok with sex for sex’s sake (if he is to be believed). Surely he would not be shocked, shocked!, that a professional woman in Manhattan isn’t a virgin?
It’s just… weird. Don’t you think?
Does Don know that Lee, Jr. is gay? I was trying to remember if Sal told his version of it. It’s something that could be handy if he ever tries to leave. I’ve also wondered if he’s ever going to put the moves on Don or Pete; while I know Don would tell him where to get off (no pun intended) Pete’s enough of a toady he might put out for a bonus.
