Mad-Men: 4.04 "The Rejected" (open spoilers)

Look’s like a Pete (& Trudy) episode.

I was going to say “meh”, but from the previews at the end, it looks like it was a setup for next week’s head-to-head collisions.

Hey! Last week I was saying I wanted a Pete-oriented episode and some Cosgrove! Maybe next time I should ask for a pony.

Getting my way aside, I liked this episode the most so far this season. A fair amount of stuff moving the plot forward and a good handful of laughs with Peggy’s “renting” comment, her poking her head up to the window like a prairie dog and Cosgrove’s “retards” remark. Oh, and Cooper hanging out eating an apple just made me laugh. At the same time, you had a couple great moments in Allison’s quitting, Peggy’s reaction to Pete’s news and the (perhaps too obviously played) separation of the Old Guard and the Youth Movement and people taking sides. Anyway, I liked it.

As soon as Peggy’s new friend got on the elevator, I knew where that storyline was headed. Mad Men usually isn’t so obvious. On the other hand, I totally thought that Peggy’s sidekick was gay, so that was a bit of a surprise.

It’s weird how now I actually like seeing Pete catch a break, and like seeing Don getting taken down a few pegs. So different than the first season.

I loved Don’s outburst to Faye at the end. It actually made me think of 1776 when Franklin shouted “It’s a new idea!”

Of course, while I think he was completely right about one thing, he was 100% wrong about not predicting people’s future behavior by their past actions. I’m not sure how Don Draper could even that utter sentence with apparent sincerity.

It was great to see Cosgrove again. I also liked Harry’s warning that they’re all up-and-coming together. Of course, like Don shouldn’t need to be told that you can predict people based on previous behavior, the account man shouldn’t need to be told that he has to socialize.

I also loved Don’s unfinished line. “My life is very” fucked up? Terrible? Complicated? Pathetic? Not what I expected?

Don’t forget her stoicly pounding her head on her desk after congradulating Pete. What was up with Peggy twirling her ring? She’s not engaged, is she (she kept refering to a boyfriend, not a fiance)? Was it just a regular ring?
Oh, and I like how Joan & Roger (& probally most of the office) now know that Don did something with Allison, but Don doesn’t seem to realize this. Is she going to show up again (possibly pregnant)?

Best line of the show was when Roger referred to Don’s [beat] girl.

I liked the episode. Was anyone else let down after the “this episode contains brief nudity” lead-in and it was just the “artistic nude” photos, and not Betty or Joan?

Peggy’s assistant saying he would get Trudy “so pregnant”. Don’s new secretary (don’t need to worry about him asking her to bring his keys).

It’s fun to see all the 60’s stuff, and the times changing.

It was Faye’s ring which she gave to Peggy to hold. I guess Faye wanted to seem more like “one of the girls” while discussing moisturizing treatments and how to land a guy.

It was Fay’s ring. Fay (Faye?) took it off before she went in with the focus group, so she’d be “one of the girls”.

I think that was a mistake. If I’m a single woman and all I want is a husband, I’m gonna listen to the woman who already has one.

ETA: Damn. Don types faster than I do, and so does Jophiel.

I guess I was wrong about Allison being okay.

This is the first season I’ve watched “live”, and I just noticed the Mad Men-themed commercials. Have they always had those?

The bad knock-off ones (like the one for Suave) is new this season. They’ve had the text tie-ins (“BMW invented this ad phrase in 1965…”) since at least last season which was the first season I watched “live”.

There was a line from Don that I really enjoyed last night.

I forget who he was talking to but they made a comment about their futures being tied to whatever they were talking about, and Don replied, “Not mine.” Jon Hamm delivered it perfectly.

Even better, it was Freddy saying that their futures were depending on the feelings of a bunch of 25 year old girls (or something). Then Allison melts down. Uh, Don, you might want to re-think your response.

It was Freddy saying “Can you believe our financial futures are pinned on these people?” referring to the psychologist getting a round table together to discuss cold cream. Don’s remark was perfect, especially since Pond’s was Freddy’s only real draw for the agency.

I don’t need super-ad-man Don from Season 1 but after four episodes a win for him would be nice. He’s been putzing it up both in and out of the office.
“Did you get any peaches?”
“We’ll discuss it inside!”

I may have missed something crucial, but how do we know she isn’t? Everything I saw (including hitting on Peggy at the party) indicates that she is.

No, I think he’s talking about Peggy’s male sidekick at work. The guy who works part-time. Who said he’d “so” get Trudy pregnant.

It was actually pears, and I loved Don’s glum expression as he took one last peek out at the hallway before closing the door.
Also loved his expression as he observed Peggy trying on Faye’s wedding ring.
I loved this episode because I enjoy the characters of Peggy and Pete, but Don had some good moments, as well–not the least of which was ducking the object that Allison threw at him.
Joan then asks him if Allison should return after a few days time-out, and he says “Whatever she wants.” *pause *“No.”

I was a bit slow on the uptake/missed the dialogue when Pete had the discussion with his father-in-law in the apartment…how did he pressure him for the whole account to the point that he called him a sonofabitch (or something to that effect)?

I think because of the baby and Trudy’s father saying they’d need a bigger place, etc. The whole account would mean more money and a better life for his daughter and (long hoped for) grandchild so telling Pete “no” wasn’t really an option.
