Mad-Men: 6.09 "The Better Half" (open spoilers)

I don’t think he is either, but if he is–please let him give us some more Sal.

I wonder how long before someone picks “I’m Bobby #5” as a user name here.

(I wonder about really stupid stuff sometimes.)

Man, Sharon Tate was beautiful.

I thought that was an interesting choice of shirt for Megan to wear. A big red star? Why that instead of a plain white T from Don’s underwear drawer? The first thing I thought of was Macy’s, since that’s their logo. But they are a client of ours, so I sort of have it on the brain.

I also noticed the very loud sirens at the Draper’s apartment, which seemed way too loud for 25 floors up. We were clearly meant to notice them, and not just as background “city noise”.

I thought the parallel scenes between Don & Betty making out in the cabin, and Megan & [actress friend] in the apartment, were interesting. When they cut to the Draper’s apartment I thought, hmm, maybe they’re about to make out. And, almost.

I kind of wish my dad was as good a grandparent to my kids as Roger is to his. His daughter should take the stick out of her ass. Roger absolutely loves that kid.

It wasn’t just you–I thought of Macy’s as well. And you’d be surprised how far sound will carry. I live on the tenth floor, and there’s this panhandler (or several, who knows) who likes to set up across the street. I can hear him jingling his cup quite clearly…

I figured out who Bob Benson is: a non hick, attractive version of Kenneth from 30 Rock.

Good call!

Those of us who live in highrises know that sirens carry to upper floors really really well.

My thinking with Bob and the dead father thing is that he searched out a nurse for Pete’s mom and just used the story about his father to help sell Pete on the idea.

Sure, but it still shows that he’s just as willing to lie to get into people’s good graces. He’s a master manipulator.

Well, given that his attempts have thus far irritated both Don and Ken, I’d say he’s just “a manipulator”. He’s no master.

True. Pete’s fallen for it because Bob is the closest thing he has to a friend.

Well, he’s also apparently friends with Duck.

(Pete makes a lot of bad decisions.)

I avoid the coming attractions after the ep but understand that they are intentionally “bad” because the creator doesn’t want to do them in the first place.

Are they screwing with us (me!) in the little blurb included on the channel guide too? This week it included “Joan goes to the beach”… surely I’m not the only red-blooded male who was hoping for more!

That’s a whole series right there. I’d tune in every week.

I realize this is now an “old” thread as there’s already been another episode, but I’ve seen an interesting theory about Bob Benson floating around the TWOP forums and a few review sites: that he is Don’s son, conceived by teenage Dick Whitman in the whorehouse. So this ties in with:

-All the whorehouse flashbacks. The prostitute who had sex with him was kicked out, so Dick never knew what happened to her.

-His name is Bob, similar to Don’s legitimate son, Bobby. This episode had the meta-reference to him being “Bobby #5” but he is actually only the fourth actor to take the role. Maybe the Bobby #1 “who went home” is a meta-reference to Bob Benson?

-And this is something that occurred to me (although maybe someone else has written this online elsewhere). This could explain the competing stories about his father. Perhaps the time when Bob’s father died “and any gesture was appreciated” was when Dick Whitman was reported killed in action. The father who was nursed back to health could be a step-father who actually raised him.

Doesn’t quite work. If Bob Benson was Dick Whitman’s long lost son, he probably wouldn’t know that Dick was killed in the war.

They already went to that well with Adam, and that made some sense, but this would be too contrived.
