That pretty much sums it up. I could give you mine, but I prefer to hear from all of you.
Male: Ken Cosgrove-Can write.
Female: Trudy Campbell-Can jitterbug.
As a gay man… There is no one on this earth hotter than Christina Hendricks in the role of Joan Harris / Joan Holloway. RAWR!
What I meant to post…word for word.
And I’ll put in a plug for Sal Romano. What happened to him? I keep hoping Peggy will run into him at some downtown bohemian party and learn that he’s come out, met a hot little stud muffin and is making underground art movies in the Kenneth Anger mold.
During the season three’s finale “Shut the Door. Have a Seat” Peter Campbell and Lane Pryce lapped Don and Roger for the title of most interesting characters in the cast. Since Lane’s departure, Pete is the most interesting character left. I’m done with Don’s character arc. Shout out to Peggy, but her arc always seemed too telegraphed and transparent. I can’t tell where Pete’s headed, and I don’t care if he’s “unlikable” - he’s interesting.
Yeah, the man with the miniature orchestra is far and away the best written character on the show.
pete campbell is my favorite character. he’s easy to hate, and only after his own interests, but his storylines are really interesting.
My favorite character in terms of whose storyline interests me the most is Don. (Sorry for the boring answer, but it’s true. He is extraordinarily well-drawn.)
My favorite character in terms of who makes me perk up when they’re on screen is (seriously) Stan Rizzo. I just love that guy.
Roger is still the most fun to watch. Joan still makes me drool. But Jon Hamm simply nails his character, episode after episode. It’s a tour de force, really.
Favourite: Roger. The fact that he gets almost all the best one liners probably helps. I enjoy looking at him and seeing a version of what Don might become though too - especially if the series goes down the expected road of stopping in 1969/1970 and we never get to see Don reach his Roger years.
Don and Pete probably come a close second/third.
My favourite female character is Sally. She is going to be all kinds of fucked up when she grows up. It’s been interesting seeing her develop in ways that respond to her parents and their personalities, as well as the situation arising out of the divorce, especially the way she is learning to play against her mother’s insecurities. That said, she’s also still a little girl, who runs for her mother when faced with life changing events. She’s just at a really interesting age and the series, in my opinion, has used her pretty well, both for the sake of her own character but also to illuminate what is going on with the rest of the cast.
Female - Joan! My heart flutters a little whenever she shows up in a scene. (Also, I read on another board about her wardrobe being a reflection of her inner feelings, and now I doubly look forward to seeing her - for what she’s wearing.) I’m wondering where her storyline is going to take her, now that she’s a partner, getting divorced, and doesn’t want anything more to do with Roger.
Male - Pete Campbell, surprising myself. His story is tied evenly with Don’s story. though I want to know what happens with Don and Megan’s marriage, I’m equally interested in Pete and the bubbly Trudy’s marriage. Something has got to give, now that Pete has permission to get himself a little apartment in the city.
As far as who is most interesting onscreen, I would lean toward Pete. Don’s character arc is a bit more played out at this point, and Pete’s life is a little more unpredictable.
In terms of who would be best to hang out with IRL, Roger is nearly the only one who’s not humorless and self-involved, so I’d probably have to pick him, although I’d be constantly worried abut him embarrassing me.
Pete season 2 and 3 was my favorite… they went to far with the entitled rich boy thing after that.
Before that he was going through that interesting transition of privliege and aware of the world’s changes. The palatable uncomfortableness during Roger’s minstrel song at the derby party, his desire to and drive to understand clients–all were interesting and compelling. For awhile I’d rather watch Pete than Don.
Probably right now, Sally Draper is my favorite. A lot of interesting potential and she’d a good actress.
I’d say that sums up my view, too. Roger gets all the really good lines, or at least all the ones that Joan doesn’t get.
The women are more interesting to me than the men, perhaps because their roles and identities are evolving so much during this time period. And with the exception of Betty, they seem far more adaptable to the changing times than the men do. Joan is an absolute joy to watch, as is Peggy.
As a gay woman, I couldn’t have said it better myself. ![]()
As a het man, I concur.
Roger Sterling.
Roger. As a het woman, I can honestly say that while I might have sex with Don, I’d *marry *Roger, knowing that the fun we’ll have before the horrible end will be worth it.
I’ll still say Pete but this last season took him a little beyond “schemey-sleazy bad” to almost comic-book, parody-of-himself bad. Roger’s good and I’ll give him second place but mainly in doses and Roger-centric episodes are a bit much.
