MAD MEN has left me filled with rage at my fellow Dopers

For many moons now I have sought to cut down on my TV watching. I did this by the simple expedient of not replacing shows that I liked when they were cancelled, and not watching newly premiered shows.

For a long time this worked. Buffy the Vampire Slayer went off the air, and then Angel. The West Wing. Gilmore Girls. Resolutely I ignored 24 and Lost and Ugly Bettyand Saving Grace.

I was almost free.

But you sick bastards couldn’t let that happen, now could you? No, you had to start these damn Mad Men threads. You whispered words of praise to Jon Hamm Elizabeth Moss. You hinted that Christina Hendricks was as comely as ever. That Vincent Kartheiser had some acting chops when he wasn’t playing Oedipus. Even worse you hinted that the writng was masterful and direction simply magnificent. You tempted me, and I fell.

I shall have my revenge. It will be either swift and terrible, or slow and even more terrible, and possibly medium speed and of yet-to-be-determined terribleness.

Steel yourselves.

If your revenge will take the form of alerting Mad Men fans to an equally good show, 'venge away! Because when it’s gone for another year, I’ll have nothing to watch.

Oh wait. Breaking Bad will be back. Have you seen it?

Thou art on my list, woman. When the genetically engineered venem-spewing flame-spitting gonad-chewing vampire ninja howler monkeys (armed with light sabers) appear on your doorstep, thou will have only thyself to blame.

I don’t think Mad Men is a particularly interesting show, and I’m perplexed at all the affection shown toward it. I actually bought the first season on DVD because Netflix was running behind and I was convinced that it was the kind of show I’d really love…but I haven’t been able to get past the fourth episode. The writing isn’t all that sharp, the plotting isn’t all that tight, and I’m already tired of scene after interminable scene of Don being guardedly angsty as he sleeps around while Betty boils quietly beneath the surface.

Is it like The Wire, in that the first few episodes are somewhat slow going but it picks up tremendously after that?

Can anyone tell me if you all had Mad Men threads during its first season? I have just started watching the first season on DVD, and my searches here on the dope have turned up naught in the way of threads from last season.

It picks up, but not tremendously. I think it’s one of those shows that you’ll love if the characters and their journeys are interesting to you. But not a lot “happens”, not like what we’re used to in other dramatic series.

Motorgirl, I think there were threads. I’ll see if I can find some.

Try searching under character or actor names. “Mad men” won’t work because both words are too short (likewise AMC) but “Vincent kartheiser” might, or “Draper,” or “Peggy Olsen.”

Here’s a couple for you.

I have to agree…I caught up with season 1 during the marathon before season 2 started, but I can’t get into a show that has absolutely no redeeming characters. I gave up on it.

thou shalt

carry on

“Wilt” is a word, dearest–an archaic past tense of “will.” In the second and third persons, “will” is used by those of us with sticks up our butts to express simple futurity, as opposed to “shall,” which expresses determination. I was not ORDERING you to blame no one but yourself; I was predicting that would be the case.

If you intend to use “will”, it should be “wilt” when used with “thou”.

If I am not mistaken.

Excellent, thanks!
