My family (wife, son, mother-in-law) are flying out on the 23rd (next Tuesday!) and landing in Madrid on Christmas Eve. So our first two days in Madrid will be the 24th and 25th.
I’m finally (it’s been a long semester) getting around to looking into the “what to do” in and around Madrid, and have no problems with that: Prado, Reina Sofia, El Escorial, etc., etc. The problem is that all of these great museums and sites will have to wait until the 26th and beyond, which is fine. What I need to know is this: What can we do on Christmas Eve and Day in Madrid? What would possibly be open? I’m not terribly worried because we spent last Christmas break in Rome, where even on these days there were open restaurants, open bars, and plenty of open churches and whatnot… but my myriad guidebooks all suggest that Madrid may be more quiescent than Rome at Christmas.
