Mafia: Evil Dead - DAY/NIGHT ONE

Well… I don’t know if I’m exactly pushing for alpha/beta reveals, but I am pushing for a discussion of it. It is once again a “plan” that isn’t exactly thought through, so once again, I’ll just throw out my ideas:

By having everyone claim either alpha or beta, we’d divide the town in two parts. Given the following assumptions:

1 - claims are made in random order
2 - scum will likely try to claim 50% Alpha, 50% Beta
3 - PFKs have no idea where to claim unless chosen last
4 - Town power roles have A/B status as well
5 - There are 50% Alpha and 50% Beta in town

There are two possible outcomes:

  • One group is larger than the other by 2 people or more
  • Both groups are the same size (+/- 1 person)

Now, if one group is larger than the other, there will be at least one more scum or pfk hiding in that group.

If they are the same size, and we eventually kill two scum/pfks from that group, odds are that there are 1-3 scum/pfk in the other group as well.

Personally, I see this as a potentially huge help for town in the end game, but it does require that we get the A/B status before people die, thus my eagerness to get it discussed today, or at least tomorrow. If we do it when we have a lot of people dead, the value of doing it will be decreased.

I can’t really see any problem with this unless a PFK (or scum for that matter) has a WC of killing/revealing all Alphas (or Betas). There is a problem with the viability of the theory, as I think assumptions 4 and 5 are perhaps taking it too far.

By all means, suspect my motives for advocating this, but please discuss it as well. I ensure that I have only the best interests of town in mind, but you won’t find out until I’m either dead or confirmed otherwise.

Damn, the site took ages to come back.

OK you’ve now explained clearly how you feel about Alpha/Beta claims. I wasn’t so much bothered about whether you were for or against it but rather wanted to know which it was. Now I do.

Again - maybe it’s just your posting style then but it did sound as though you were to me. I see your point about getting used to someone’s style - it must have been annoying when I said that about macey. On the downside, it also means they may know you well enough to fool you.

I’m not honestly sure whether the Day’s officially over or not but as we can post normally Day or Night, now you’ve responded I understand where you’re coming from better so
**
unvote Millit the Frail**

Now you’ve got me because I can’t remember which game it was off the top of my head. I know it was on Idle’s offboard site though and it was something Roosh in particular used to say. At the time I assumed it was your name as it was the first game I’d read but perhaps it was a filter one of the mods had put up - wouldn’t surprise me. Maybe someone else remembers though.

I’m not dismissing the idea out of hand but your theory is based on the assumption that power roles have alpha/beta status. If they don’t then there’s a real possibility that the 2 or 3 extra people on one side are actually town power roles and not scum

Should we assume then, that you are either:

  1. Vanilla Town?
  2. Scum?
  3. PFK?

because, it seems if you were a town power role, you’d KNOW if they had Alpha or Beta status.

I suppose it is possible that you are a town power role and you’re trying not to admit to the status.

You’re also assuming we have a 50/50 split on Alpha or Beta. Why are you making that assumption?

But I’m left feeling that you’re still fishing for this information. It could very well be important information for either Scum or PFK. Perhaps certain Scum or PFK powers depend on the status of their intended victim.

If this is the case, then a mass Alpha/Beta claim could be horrific for Town.

We may get more information about how the status influences the game play. Until we’re relatively sure of that, I suggest we let this drop.

I don’t understand why people would assume there is an even split between Alpha and Beta status. Even if there were, then what would we do with the information from a disparity between the numbers of Alphas and Betas? I don’t see anything to gain from an A/B claim except the thrill of “you show me yours, I’ll show you mine”. Am I missing something? Og knows it wouldn’t be the first time.

Since the Alpla/Beta information is in the role name, I don’t think the information will be lost on death:

The reason not to reveal it is that it could help scum or PFK, if they have powers that target alpha or beta exclusively.
Town could have similar powers, but since we don’t know that it is better to wait until we get more information. All it would do now is force power roles, scum and PFK’s to possibly lie.
But we cannot prove that they did so and scum would be better in analyzing patterns (if there are any), because they know more (who is scum and how scum lied or not about their a/b status)).

For the record, Thing Fishs vote is on Pleonast.

4 is an invalid assumption.

Because of this, 5 is also likely an invalid assumption.

Because of this, I doubt massclaiming the alpha-beta status will net us anything.

Ai, pede, you know we just lynched macey because he asked for the information you just gave? Don’t spill information unless you need it to proof you’re town or it helps catching scum.

I know, but I don’t want Chuc and the rest of the town to make a bad decision if I can help it.

And I suspect I’m not impacting the scum when I say that my role has no Alpha/Beta status.

Ok… That kills of any benefit we might have had from this. Or rather: the risk of outing power roles (or pooling them together and possibly killing them) completely negates any positive effect of claiming. For my part, that therefore ends this discussion.

I won’t be posting until the 25th, so Merry Christmas everyone!

Come on! The suspense is killing me! Didn’t this day end like NINE hours ago?

EXT THE EDGE OF THE CORNFIELD - DUSK

Pan across the faces of the assembled students, chanting.

STUDENTS
(Variously)
Corn-field! Corn-field! Corn-field!

They seize on MACEY, pull him roughly to his feet. He panics.

MACEY
Hey, guys, what’s going on here? This is silly. This is ridiculous. I’m just the new guy, with ways different from your own. Unnecessary suspicion of a relative newcomer is a staple of all types of horror fiction, and it always gets the good guys into trouble. Think about it!

There is a brief pause. Close on the face of a random student.

STUDENT
Lynch him!

OTHER STUDENTS
(Variously)
Yeah! Do it! Lynch! Lynch! Yankees suck!

HOOPY FROOD’S VOICE
(From the wood chipper)
Kill him! Yeah!

MACEY
You! You’re dead!

HOOPY FROOD’S VOICE
Hey, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

MACEY
Augh!

They shove him toward the waiting stalks of corn. Suddenly, MACEY stops. We see his back rise and fall as he pants in exertion. Close on MACEY’S SHADOW, which suddenly seems to be growing longer. Pan up MACEY’s body, until his head is in view; he turns toward the camera. His face looks like an everything pizza.

MACEY
You want to get rough, fleshbags? I’ll say it. Let’s… get… dangerous.

A sword suddenly appears in his hand. His eyes narrow. Then, suddenly, we hear the SOUND OF CRACKING CORN STALKS from behind him. He spins around in terror, and the cornstalks part. MACEY is drawn among them.

MACEY
No! Augh! No! Argh! Please! No, not using my own leg! Heeeaaaauuugggh…

A pregnant pause. After a bit, the corn parts, and what is left of MACEY is ejected. It is a hand, clawed and still gripping a wicked curved dagger. It drops the dagger, and rises up onto its stump of a wrist. It begins making a variety of gestures, frantically. A girl steps forward.

HUMAN PLOT DEVICE
Oh! I am fluent in American Sign Language!

STUDENT
How convenient and not at all forced!

HUMAN PLOT DEVICE
It says we must listen carefully, that it and it alone holds the key to our salvation. It says it has important advice to share.

*All look expectantly at the hand.

The HAND OF MACEY gives them all the finger. HOOPY FROOD laughs from the woodchipper.*

MACEY, The Prince of Blades, a Deadite (Scum) Strongman, has been lynched.

And he’s mostly dead.

But not all dead.

He’s too dead for his vote to count. He’s way too dead to lynch, or to Night kill. He’s not too dead to talk, though.

He’s definitely about four fifths dead. But four fifths dead is, of course, one fifth alive. And that fact will be taken into consideration when making any calculation regarding the number of Deadites still alive.

Maybe you can find a way to get rid of that troublesome one-fifth. Time will tell.

Night One starts here. I am very tired and a little tipsy, so I’ll finish up the Dusk stuff tomorrow morning (including any PMs I owe anyone related to actions taken so far). In the meanwhile, all votes for MACEY are expunged; all other outstanding votes remain active. Have fun!

Good job macey voters.

Now I can’t get Billy Crystal out of my head.

We can’t lynch him by day, we can’t Night kill him. He can’t vote but he can squawk away until we figure out how to kill him. So we’re ignoring him now?

Yeehaw!

Just goes to show how wrong you can be. Good job guys.

Nice!
On the downside, he’s only four-fifths dead, anyone familiar with Evil Dead how to permanently kill Deadites?
On the upside, if there is a way to kill the last bit, we could shut up Hoopy Frood for good as well!

Would a Deadite Strongman be vanilla or does it refer to his hand staying alive or something else?

Onto the macey votes, I don’t think it looks like a brilliant scum plan*. So assuming it took scum by surprise, early voters are more likely to be town with maybe scum joining later.

Macey’s post is followed by votes for others by me (Natlaw) and amrussell. I ask macey questions, amrussell explains masons on the SDMB.
Two hours after macey’s post the votes start with brewha and Hawkeyeop, who both got FOS’ed by macey in return. If scum decided by now that macey was toast, that could be providing cover for either of them. But with only two votes yet, I don’t think that is the case* (3 others with two votes, not counting pedescribe). No more posts by macey since then.
JSexton did cast the sixth vote on macey, after which peekercpa and Pleonast pushed Thing Fish to four votes. pedescribe switched to make it 7-3.

Other voters for maceys: Hockey Monkey, special ed, dotchan, JSexton, pedescribe, Rapier42, Millit the Frail
Voters who completely ignored macey: bufftabby, peekercpa, DiggitCamara.
Player without vote: MHaye (did promise one, probably caught by board outage), Blaster Master (no posts at all), Nanook of the North Shore (still traveling?), Zeriel (busy at work?, one post), Hal Briston, macey, Almost Human (technically vote on Millit but has already unvoted).

I don’t think I can read much into it now (votes for Thing Fish have good reason imo), but with more information later it might contain some nuggets.

*) yes, yes, scum-would-never-do-that applies.

Uh, we got a scum on day one? The board inexplicably goes down. But the scum is only .8 dead. The peekkids went to bed at a reasonable time. There’s a fat bearded dude getting ready to fly around the world depositing gifts for everyone in one night. I am not over limit on any CCs (yet). There is still a half bottle of Cuervo in front of me. It must be time to say Happy Holidays to all.

And Unvote Jerry

One of the few parts of the movies that I remember was when Ash (I think) got his hand infected and had to chop it off because it was trying to kill him. For the life of me I can’t remember how he eventually killed the durn thing. Did he just stab it to death or was it tossed in the fire or something?

Yeah, but who’s going to do that? We can’t lynch him, so we’re either looking at some sort of non-vanilla ability, or (less likely) we’ll discover some way to use Alpha/Beta status to finish him off. Either way, we can’t actually do anything about it now, and speculation is getting us dangerously close to fishing for a power role. So ixnay on the andhay, capisce?

It looks like Thing Fish is our new lead candidate. I wasn’t feeling it before, but as my scumdar is obviously on the fritz, could someone run through the headlines of the case please?

Wow… That is the first time I’ve played in a game with a day one scum lynch… Great job guys, I did not catch that one.

For good measure, I will unvote Thing Fish
