Mafia: Evil Dead - Signups and Night Zero

A fair number of you folks do not have your PMs turned on. Please check yours, particularly if you have not received a PM by the end of tonight.

Thanks!

PM received.

Confirmed.

:eyes everyone suspiciously:

OK, I’m way tired and need to go to bed. I’ve done about two thirds of the PMs so far, but a few of them have bounced back because people’s PMs aren’t turned on, so there’s a bit of confusion. Don’t bother meta-gaming the order of receipt, by the way; I randomized the sending order after I randomized the role assignment.

I’ll finish these in the morning, but right now my fingers are tired and my eyes hurt. G’night!

And return PM to confirm! Confirm in-thread if you wish, but only as a supplement to doing a return PM to confirm. Thanks.

I’ve turned on PMs… I don’t know if you’ll have to resend or something, but there we go…

/Confirmed

They’re zombies in the movie or scum in our case :stuck_out_tongue:

Confirmed, and I may have to actually watch this movie, because I’m confused as hell!

True, but that would mean I’m still alive!
As I just confirmed my role PM, it is really too late to back out

For those asking: I’m male and not afraid of demon-haunted woods, but the cornfield creeps me out…

And to test my coloring: Story, could you post day/night start/end times with a timezone?
I’ll think I’ll switch the board clock to match so I don’t forget it.

About the random vote start, I haven’t got any experience. But one or two to start the discussion is ok I think. Thing Fish’s idea to restrict it to small random group might help if big enough to include at least one scum, but voting outside that group (for some reason) should not be forbidden.

Just to make sure I need to proofread carefully, I assume this doesn’t include ‘post editing allowed’?

That is correct. No post editing, but otherwise, go to town.

All but two role PMs have been sent, and those two have not been sent because the players in question do not have their PMs turned on.

So far I have ten roles confirmed by PM. The game will start for real no later than tonight, whether or not all confirmations have been received.

Role confirmed!

and Unvote Naf

in case my vote was taken seriously.

Actually, watch all three.

The first movie (Evil Dead) was meant to be straight up B-grade horror. Sam Raimi was given hardly any budget and it shows. And I believe he is the first and only director to have a woman get raped by a tree.

The second movie (Evil Dead 2) starts out with a recap of the first movie events, and continues on with the next Day. From what I understand, the way this movie looks is really what Raimi wanted all along, but he couldn’t accomplish it until he got the budget, which he was granted for this installment. It starts out with the same straight up horror tone, but after the posessed hand bit, becomes considerably more tongue-in-cheek. It’s not a jarring transition, but it’s noticeable. It’s almost as if Raimi came to realize during filming that he’s not that good at doing straight up horror, so he decided to have fun with the whole bit.

The third movie (Army of Darkness) doesn’t even bother trying to be horror, and ends up being action and slapstick. And it works. Very well in fact.

And thanks for the guest star role, Story. I was very amused.

Let me just state very clearly for the record: if anyone makes a roleclaim of “Nightwing”, I call for an insta-lynch.
Checks thoroughly to make sure tdpatriots isn’t in the game

How bout Killer Moth?

Confirming.

Can’t wait to start and, as buff said, I’m very much female!

Hey all, got my role PM. Consider this my confirmation.

Yes, random voting on Day One is one of my favorite topics. The thing is, I don’t know if I’ve ever adequately explained my reasoning for why I support it, and a lot of it is based on some loose ties to some pretty esoteric bits of information theory, so it may just be me over-intellectualizing the game, but I’ll see what I can do.

Premise 1: Those who have no additional information, will have votes that are informationally indistinguishable from random. Those who have additional information may have votes that are distinguishable from random.

Premise 2: Most Pro-town roles have no additional information at the start of the game, while most anti-town roles have additional information. For instance, a doctor knows he’s the doctor, but that is essentially equivalent to any other pro-town player knowing only that he’s protown, and since he hasn’t protected anyone, the doctor has essentially no additional information. The only pro-town role that necessarily has any tangible additional information on which to base a vote is the masons. However, a masonry is necessarily smaller than the scum group (otherwise it’s game breaking) and as such, will still have less information.

Premise 3: Random actions of any kind (especially votes) are distinctly different from non-random actions. This is the same premise that I use for my pseudo random hypothesis.

Premise 4: Even if there is no information to be gleaned, even a full set of truly random votes will create topics of conversation. For instance, “Why did this person get several/not get any votes?”

So, the basic underlying theory is just that, once we have some additional information, like some alignments of some pro-town players or anti-town players, we can go back and analyze the initial random voting pattern. The worst that will happen is that there’s no information to be gained. However, it is possible that we will find useful information. Hence, it is, on average, an information gain with no possibility of information loss.

That all said, I do not support maintaining random votes for all of Day One. I support them to the point that sufficient information exists such that no person with no additional information can reasonable make a random vote. IOW, it’s generally good for about the first half of the first Day, when most of the discussion is about game mechanics and general strategy, but beyond that, random votes need to either be changed to non-random votes, or possibly left on the same person except with justification added.

Confirming

Confirminating.

Will there be a new thread when the game officially starts?

I just want to know if I need to keep checking this thread, or if there’ll be a new and shiny one show up when the game actually starts.
