Mystery Mafia -- Sign-up Thread

Sometime in the next couple of weeks (once De’endee is finished and such) I’m planning to run a game based on a fantastic set-up I followed on a different board.

The premise: There are townsfolk and there are scum; there might be neutrals. Everyone has a night action. Nobody is told in their role PM what their night action does. The effect of night actions must be pieced together from context and the additional information gleaned each night and discussed in-thread. Awesomeness ensues.

I’d like as many people as possible for this game. Twenty-seven is probably the minimum, although if need be I can tweak it to see how it will work with less. I’ll also encourage people to drum up interest for this in other venues where Dopers like to play Mafia, like Idle’s board.

Anyway. I’ll have more information about timing when I get a sense of how much interest there is. If you can play during a certain timeframe but not other timeframes, let me know that as well. And if you have any additional questions about the set-up that you want answered before signing up, I’m happy to respond.

For now, sign up below!

Oh my goodness.

Oh my goodness indeed.

IN, subject to that I’m not available Friday afternoon through Sunday morning (EDT) so I would appreciate it if neither Dusk nor Dawn took place during that time, at least for the first few Days.

sounds interesting. Depending on the timing ( and what else I’m into at the time of start up)
pencil me in

Sounds like a hoot.

Please

bump; great to see a decent amount of interest so far!

By the way, I’m currently playing a 111-person Harry Potter-themed werewolf/mafia game over at the forum where I got the idea for this setup. It’s been an absolute blast so far…over 14,000 posts and we still have around half the players left!

I will not expect, anticipate, or in any way require that kind of posting volume in the Mystery Mafia game, of course.

How the heck do you (generic you) mod a 100+ player game? For starters, it’s gotta suck to monitor the thread for votes and unvotes. Second, there have to be a LOT of killing roles to speed up the game. Third, there’s a lot of potential for the game to get out of balance.

I would just pick a player at random to vote for if there were 100+ players. Probably have better odds of hitting scum, too.

You know what? /in.

Just because I KNOW I’ll be a roleblocker.

Five different mods. And they give small bonuses to players who post regular and accurate vote counts.

And yeah, lots of killing. Every day there are windows for ITAs (in-thread attacks) where people can try to cast spells on other players.

I can’t talk too much about the game because you’re not supposed to talk about it while it’s still going on, but scum (wolves, rather) were the lynch targets the first three days.

/in!

I’m almost never on the bandwagon for the first couple of lynches, so that means I would have looked awfully bad in that game.

At least this way I’ll finally have a power

Nah, it’s a marathon. When you start with 110+ players, the second wagon still has 30+ people at least, not to mention all the miscellaneous smaller wagons, and there just aren’t that many wolves/scum out there.

(I’ve developed a whole different Mafia vocabulary while playing over there; it’ll be a little hard to adjust while running this game. It’s Werewolf, so instead of doctors there are angels, instead of detectives there are seers – who have peeks instead of investigations – instead of townsfolks there are villagers…the language is remarkably different in a lot of ways; it’s pretty interesting.)
