I think you guys voting for Prof. Pepperwinkle, Biotop, and Johnny Bravo need to put your heads together and decide what you really want to do, because those votes aren’t accomplishing anything as they are. Either recruit someone to your view or pick one of the high vote players (snfaulkner, Stranger On A Train, or Hi, Neighbor!) based on who you think is most scummy, otherwise you’re just whistling Dixie.
Oh, and Sunny Daze still needs to pick someone to vote for. It was going to be snfaulkner as of post [POST=“21247341”]#298[/POST] but that was a while ago so vote your conscience.
When you consider there are 3 hours left in the Day, and there is only one vote separating the lower-tier targets from the upper-tier ones, this isn’t that valid an argument. I may well change my vote by EoD. And then again…
From what I can tell, you and Johnny Bravo have a mutual OMGUS going, and Hi, Neighbor! was responding to Biotop, who voted him just to pressure him into doing something. At thing point, people ought to be having some stronger opinion about who is more or less likely scum, and I’d like to see enough focus to separate the vanilla from the slime. Like I said earlier, I’m not really expecting to see the new dawn, so I’m okay with being lynched, just noting that Mahaloth was first to do so after I gave him some stinkeye, and snfaulkner claims it is just retaliatory but he hasn’t been actively theorizing about anyone else. And if I’m wrong about snfaulker (which is possible) then I think that provides another possible clue, but we’ll see what the tasseomancy gives us at the end of the day.
Absolutely not. I’m under no obligation to throw my vote on a train just to pile on. If I have time before EoD I’ll review the cases against the top contenders and may or may not change my vote.
Shenaniganation is totally called for at this point, but I’m sticking with snfaulkner unless there is a persuasive reason to switch. I bend with the wind but do not break.
Unvoting **Biotop **because it was based on mere OMGUS reasons.
Went back to review why **Stranger **was so stringent on voting for snfaulkner.
It’s important to note **snfaulkner **cast the very first vote of the game (#52). I think that’s naturally going to draw some negative attention. And snfaulkner’s “aggressive” vote (as Stranger put it), immediately led to Stranger casting his vote (#55).
Those actions actually don’t ping anything for me. It was so early in the first day, most votes are going to be based on little to nothing. And odds are, they are two towns voting for each other, and the scum is just going to roll with it.
Which leads to to think the true scum is someone who voted more recently to pile on and “go with the flow” as it were.
What you said isn’t gossip. I believe this is your first game per https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=21227154&postcount=16 – while the paranoia and general frisson is part of what makes this game fun (and frustrating), keep in mind that it’s ultimately cooperative. Town can’t win if it tears itself apart.
Being antagonistic can be a good strategy early, when pressure might lead to revealing mistakes, but it’s not an end in itself. And it’s a great way to get lynched, which hurts town if you’re town. (Remember, you still win even if you’re dead when your side wins.)
Sunny’s vote for Stranger in Post 233/236? It did bring Stranger to 3 votes.
Definitely possible. You’re an experienced player, right, Neighbor? And I believe Sunny’s new.
I can get on board with lynching Sunny, but I think snfaulkner is going to be an informative lynch, too. Let me look back over Sunny’s posts.
Edit – my bad, Sunny’s not new – I think. (They used the “/in” tag.)
Regarding my experience, I played two games (both back in 2009-10) on The Giraffe Boards.
The first one was maybe the first or second Mafia game ever played over there. Someone made a simple game that was inviting to noobs. I signed up figuring, “What the hell?” So there were a ton of noobs in that game, and guess what? I, as vanilla town, was lynched the very first night. So that was my first ever experience. Good times.
The second game I survived for a few days, but that’s it. I don’t remember much. I was vanilla town both games.
I would still classify myself as a noob for all intents and purposes.
Yeah, Sunny’s not new (I’m sorry – I have a bad memory – this was really obvious).
No, I don’t think that the vote for Stranger is particularly scummy, and I don’t see anything else in their history that is jumping out at me.
I called Sunny out for “motivated reasoning” – for the life of me, I’m not sure why I thought that. My frickin’ memory.
Sunny, you asked what that phrase meant – I meant looking for reasons post-facto to justify a decision you already want to make for reasons of your own. I think I thought that your reasoning was thin; looking back now, it’s not unusually thin. (All our reasoning was thin at that stage.)
EDIT: So Neighbor, no – not jumping on the Sunny train, barring stronger evidence.
'Cause SNF and Stranger are bringing more to the game than Hi. I strongly hope you get back over to the Giraffe, where there’s always a Mafia game brewing.
Gotcha. I think I played 2.5 games on mafiascum somewhere around 2012? I don’t really want to log back in there and check on the details because I quit my 3rd game at a time when I had some really bad stuff going on in my life. When I looked up the site to post a link to their FAQ earlier, it brought back bad memories.
Still, I wouldn’t consider myself a noob, exactly. I remember some of the jargon and commonly-accepted strategies (such as they are).
