Mafia: Goontown [Game Over]

Familiarity breeds contempt, so you.

Prof. Pepperwinkle

I really want to play now, as there are several things I’d like to point out, but not being in the game, I’ll refrain from doing so (or posting further in this thread)! Good luck all!

I played on mafiascum.net years ago, and their Wiki had decent resources for new players. Here’s an article on abbreviations, for example. (I remembered what an OMGUS vote meant when the Prof did it to me from reading this (or a similar) article.)
Hope that helps new(er) players.

Is it bad form to ask for an updated vote count (and I guess post count, since that’s a metric in this game)?

(I ask because I could do it myself if I were willing to spend the time.)

I find it hilarious and fitting that the United States’s overwhelmingly popular (though not ubiquitous)) “first past the post” voting system (at all levels of government) is the same as the system used in this game, with its emphasis on paranoia etc.

Could we design a mafia game using an alternative voting system – ranked choice, instant runoff, or something else? How would it be different, if I actually had two votes – or three, or X?

Sorry for the digression. Sticking with the Perfessor for now.

unvote snoe

'Cause OMGUS isn’t a good reason for a vote, and I want to place a serious one in the next couple of days.

One more thing: I agree with the consensus (as I understand it) that we should sanction post editing at the player level as warranted, and that it’s unlikely that scum can coordinate enough to use it during the day. Assuming they don’t have the option of scum-talking during the day; but even if they did, it’s unlikely that they could coordinate such a way of communicating without some serious rule-breaking.
I, for example, edited [URL=“https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=21241613&postcount=124”]this post/URL] to add a sentence (and, I think, to fix the text color? not sure if I did that before editing). It was a pretty innocuous post, but you can hold the editing against me by all means.

But I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for edited posts that are … problematic?

DON’T PLAY WITH MY EMOTIONS. In all seriousness, y’all, I know we’re making jokes, but am I crazy in getting a bogus vibe from the prof so far?

Would also like second opinions on this from third parties. Taylor Doose is, in some sense, a sincere townie (for Star’s Hollow), but he’s also got an ulterior agenda, and my spider-sense is tingling on the “ulterior” side of the meter with these two, if that makes sense.

He’s definitely on the short list, but I’m sticking with my vote for now.

I’m definitely getting a weird vibe from the good Professor.

OMGUS is a perfectly fine reason for an early Day 1 vote (when nearly all votes are bad). Quickly backing away from it like this definitely strikes an odd chord. It has a “look at me being reasonable!” feel to it.

I’m content with my current vote, though, at least for now.

My “bogus” tone is only due to my peculiar personality. Those who have played with me know I love shenanigans and can’t (simply can’t) resist a joke. This has garnered me a plethora of votes. But I persist.

…and sometimes after!

It’s true. Yet he won’t stop.

Just to clarify: you are voting for me because of past games.

Current vote count:

snoe: 1 (snfaulkner)
Prof. Pepperwinkle: 2 (snoe, Knowed Out)
snfaulkner: 1 (Stranger on a Train)
Biotop: 1 (Johnny Bravo)
Knowed Out: 1 (Sunny Daze)
Stranger on a Train: 1 (Mahaloth)

For the post count at any moment, go to the Thread Games main forum page, and click on the number of posts in this thread. That’ll bring up a list of who’s posted in it, and how many times each. Then subtract off the numbers I posted at the beginning of the Day (I got those by copying and pasting from there).

On the topic of alternate voting systems, Pleonast is fond of what basically amounts to approval voting: Everyone can cast as many votes as they want. To be honest, I actually prefer that, but I figured that this game, being old-school, I should keep with the simple one-player-one-vote.

It’s a pretty unabashedly jokey vote - I’m sure I’ll move it eventually. Or will I? There’s a lot of Day left.

We have till when? Thursday?

Yep, at 4pm eastern.
