Mafia in Space!

Unnerved by d_redguy’s sudden outburst, Thizzlewit sat quietly for a moment, staring off into space. After gathering his thoughts, he began to speak to Sir Dirx and percypercy:

“Any real reporter, cowardly or not, would have been out and about last night, or would have at least had a good reason for staying in his room. Perhaps d_redguy has a good reason, but if he does, he isn’t telling.”

[ooc]“Aslan ain’t givin me squat”

Really? Why? More information, please.[/ooc]

[OOC]Bah! Somebody should have posted in the other thread sooner.[/OOC]

Mr Kami lies on his bed staring at the ceiling. He’s going back home for his late father’s funeral, and is still in mourning. He had passed out just a just few hours earlier from too much drinking last night so he had not heard the alarm.

As he moves to get up his head feel like it’s having it’s own personal earthquake, he slowly takes a pill to get rid of the hangover. He decides it’s time to go to the bar instead of getting drunk in is room again. As he gets to the bar he hears he news about the murders from one of the robots, and decides to get truly wasted today. He goes to the bar and orders some vodka.

As word gets to him about the plan to kill one of the others, he decides to be a sheep and follow the majority, he votes for d_redguy.

[OOC]Where is everybody? 60 of the 72 hours in the first day have already passed, and less than half the players have voted.[/OOC]

“Thizzlewit, I think you’re being too hard on d_redguy. He’s not some bigshot investigative reporter. Did you get a chance to see his article just now? He’s only got a tiny little column. I’ll bet this is the first time he’s ever gotten involved in something this big. And it’s not like your pushing him is helping matters any…”

Any reporter, no matter how bigshot or smallshot, would have been out last night. I don’t care if d_redguy is writing front page articles for the Jupiter Times, or local obituaries on the bottom half of the Universe’s boobies page, he should have been investigating last night’s events. I want to know what he saw, or why he didn’t.”

[OOC]Sir Dirx, every night the cowardly reporter can investigate someone. Let’s just ignore the character development stuff for a moment, and look at the game mechanics: If d_redguy is the reporter, he should have investigated someone last night. Why won’t he tell us who investigated, or why he didn’t investigate?

Keep in mind, there is no official set of rules for mafia roleplaying. If I want you to think I’m a reporter, I can say I have a reporter i.d. card. I can pull it out and show it to everyone. It doesn’t mean a thing, because I just made it up. Take in-game “evidence”, such as the 'net display, with a grain of salt. No, make that a barrel of salt.[/OOC]

**[ooc]bolded so that people read this:
ok, i’m assuming most of you haven’t played mafia before so i understand how there is alot of confusion.

but, after reading about half of the first page, i seriously became incredibly confuzzled- maybe it’s because although i’ve played in like 20-30 mafia games, not a one has actually been carried past the first few posts with the role=playing style. and, while it’s nice and fun to pretend(isn’t that what mafia is anyway?) it is really just confusing the heck out of me.

also- a question to those who aren’t newbies on the sdmb:
do you usually bold the names of people you are taling about?

because when you vote for someone it should look like this:
vote: someone
^and it shoudl be in bold

simply bolding someone’s name is incredibly confusing when you’re bolding people’s names anyway. if you change your vote it should look like this:
unvote: someone
vote: other guy
^both should be bold

also- whoever posted the link in the sign-up thread is mucho helpful because i didnt’ know abotu this thread until about half an hour ago.**

ok, sorry for the bold. i know it’s annoying but i really wanted you people to know that.

[ooc] sorry saberkitty. i’ll not do the character thing any more if that makes it easier for everyone. and in case there was a question, aslan, here’s my vote again:

Confusing? Well alright. There goes that fun.

Sheesh I was having fun too. Ah well.

oh so far my vote’s still for ** d_redguy** but I’m willing to listen.
Percy

Yeah, I only signed up so I could roleplay, basically. Not that it should be hard to understand roleplay stuff.

SaberKitty: when you have ideas or suggestions about how this thread should be run, it would be courteous to consult the game master before you tell everyone how things should be done. That way, we can keep the confusion and repetition in this thread to a minimum.

I just finished a conversation with Aslan of Narnia via AIM; he is currently unable to post here due to rl obligations; he will be returning sometime in the afternoon of September 14 (EST, I believe). He requested that I clear up a few things in response to SaberKitty’s post.

First of all, some of the votes so far have been a little unclear, so from now on will be using SaberKitty’s suggestion about voting syntax. A vote should look like this:

If you are changing your vote from one player to another, it should look like this:

Please note that once a majority vote has been reached, no votes can be changed; the lynching takes place instantly, for all practical purposes. For example, there are currently 28 players in this game; if 15 of those players vote for me, I am immediately considered dead, and no player can unvote Thizzlewit to revive me.

Saberkitty also mentioned that the roleplaying in this thread has been quite confusing. The official word from Aslan is that roleplaying is not required, but it is encouraged. Additionally, roleplayers are not required to tell the truth, so in-character evidence is essentially for entertainment purposes only. If you enjoy roleplaying, feel free to do it. If you don’t like roleplaying, skip it; you only have to write two words to place your vote

It looks like we’re off to a little bit of a bad start here; nearly half the registered players haven’t even posted in this thread yet. We can still get the game back on track, if we track down the missing players. At Aslan’s request, I will be attempting to email or IM each missing player tonight, but I could really use some help. If you happen to know any of the missing players in real life or on an instant messaging service, please send them a link to this thread.

I will be posting an updated list of players and their votes shortly. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. If I can’t answer, I’m sure Aslan will

[ooc]i kind of thought that was the point as well, toaster. but if someone finds it confusing then maybe it’s not how things are done. i wouldn’t know as i’ve never played. but i would think it would be more fun if you roleplay. just my two cents.

and ronincyberpunk, no offence at the vote, please, okay? :)[/ooc]

[a viewer’s feedback]
i have never played or heard of Mafia before but this has been interesting because of the roleplaying involved; i have been tuning in everyday watching d_redguy’s struggle to keep himself alive.

the mechanics of the game do not matter to me as long as the roleplay is consistent, in fact i’ve found the ooc notes to be jarring to the experience though probably necessary.

IMHO the confusion if any suits the roleplay actually (so long as the game master involved with the tallying isn’t confused), as i would suspect ‘the confused following the blind’ mentally is normal when we’re dealing with mob lynching. don’t know what’s happening? just follow the crowd.

please do not change the show’s format!

[ooc]I was looking at the old thread for a few days and din’t see any action so I assumed it hadn’t started yet. Much thanks to Thizzlewhit who emailed me telling me about the game[/ooc]

The alarms had come and gone and nothing had stirred shadyforce fom his quarters. He awoke to find himself startled. His surroundings seemed alien to him. He had no idea where he was or what he was doing there, so he preceeded to search his quarters for clues, the same thing he had done every day for the past 3 years.

Yes, shadyforce, a renowned amnesiac had woken up (eventually) and proceeded to explore his surroundings where he eventually came to the bar to meet a large, angry and very confused crowd.

He heard them discussing 2 deaths-murders to be exact and many pointing the finger at d_redguy. shadyforce, unknown to himself - known to the rest, was always a guy to jump in, and he immediately declared his belief that d_redguy was indeed a cowardly reporter and that we should focus our intention on somebody else.

The crowd looked confused at shadyforce, some believing him since he was thought to have outstanding logic but most looking disbelievingly at him since as was often the case, shadyforce didn’t have a feckin clue what hell’s going on.

summary: I’m lost but imo we should switch the bandwagon to someone else after d_redguy’s role-claim.

Just a side note:
I play mafia regularly on www.mafiascum.net. That’s also where SaberKitty plays. Her points are valid, the role-playing is confusing and is not necissarily the best way for the town to identify the mafia.

However, it’s just so much fun! In this early stage, we have so little to go on and we might as well to liven things up. But imagine had everyone been posting, all the role-playing would be disastrous to attempt to make sense of.

Now in the later stages when the game gets smaller, it’s true the role-playing will be easier to get through since there will be less people left, but we must also factor in and analyse the evidence we will get regarding the identity of mafia.

I think it will be an excellent challenge for everyone to role-play while at the same time being able to express your logic well.

[ooc]shadyforce, you’re right, the roleplaying can be very confusing at the beginning, but I think most of the problem was due to the fact that people weren’t making their votes very clear. As long as the votes are obvious, there shouldn’t be any problem with roleplaying, right?[/ooc]

[ooc]
One other quick point:

Roleplaying is worse than useless in identifying the mafia, because roleplayers can lie about anything and everything.

If you want to roleplay your vote, you should first decide who you’re going to vote for based on out-of-character evidence, then figure out how to fit that decision into the in-character story that has developed. Does that make sense to everyone?
