Does anyone know what would go into a non-alcoholic substitute for Rum? I love Mai-Tais, I just had one made with Old Monk, orgeat, simple syrup, cointreau and one lime and a whole lot of crushed ice. I try to sip them, but before I know it they dissappear all but the lime half and half the ice. I know better than to drink two, but I would like to sip on something that tastes a bit like a Mai-Tai and won’t get me drunker.
Sometimes we make it with half black seal and half malibu. Do you enjoy Mai-Tais?
I just got back from Hawai’i and had my first mai tai…ugh. Grody to the max.
I imagine there are as many recipes as there are bars willing to charge $9.50 for them, but they were just too sweet for me.
I enjoy making sunset mai tais…they are made with mango rum, some grenadine, and some other stuff…I dunno, have it wrote down somewhere…but when you mix it together, the red sinks down(grenadine) and the lighter colors float up towards the top.
I’d say you could try drinking mai tai mix with the other non-alcoholic ingredients to make a semi-mai-tai. I’m sure there are other ways to do it, but I find that if the situation calls for less alcohol, I use at least half a shot of coconut rum for great flavor…
Mai-Tia Mix? No, we don’t use mix. I make my simple syrup out of sugar. I squeeze actual limes and put half a lime shell nestled in the crushed ice. I buy Orgeat, made with sugar and not corn syrup, good rum, and we vary the orange liqueur. They are sweet, but you don’t need to make them terribly sweet. Even using Rose’s lime juice would be a mistake as that is presweetened, the lime cuts through much of the sweetness by itself. You can cut down the simple syrup as much as you like. The orgeat is essentail though.
Chances are you didn’t have a real Mai-Tai, if it was that sweet. A lot of places put together a blend of fruit juice so sweet that it tastes like Hawaiian Punch and some rum.
A true Mai Tai is made with orgeat (almond syrup), dark rum, lime juice, maybe some orange liqueur, grenadine, etc. (I forget the exact recipe - but it doesn’t involve a lot of sweet stuff.)
