Mail from US to Mexico. Status check?

I’ve mailed a few things to a buddy in Mexico, he’s always got them. I just send them AirMail and fill out the Customs Declaration.

Well, now I sent him a package that has a little value and it’s been 3 weeks and he hasn’t received it. All I have is my USPS receipt, and the Customs Label# on the receipt.

Any recourse? Any hope?? Has anybody ever been in a similar situation??

TIA.

If it’s just normal mail, then nope. That stuff isn’t trackable.

Yes. It may well turn up eventually. If it’s been mis-sorted, it could be anywhere in the world. It’ll eventually get there. Then again, it may have been stolen.

Not a postal employee, but I periodically have to mail presents to family in Mexico.

Three weeks isn’t particularly long for what you sent. I’ve had items take up to 6 weeks to get there air mail. After that, it’s pretty unlikely to arrive.

When I’ve needed to trace lost items sent International Express in the past (it’s been a couple years), I was able to track them to the point where they arrived in Mexico, but was told that it became a subcontractor’s responsibility at that point and there was nothing the USPS could do. If you ever need to send something that can be tracked, I’d recommend checking actual traceability before you send.

I’ve had to send packages twice in the past year and gone to a local “mail box” vendor. The place I go to has a relatively high international mailing volume. The manager recommended next-day UPS. Both of packages were in Mexico the next day. One was actually delivered the next morning, the other got there two mornings later (but I sent it late in the day on the busiest mailing day of the year shortly before Christmas). It was REALLY expensive, but both got there.

The manager also told me that service varies depending on where you’re sending to. (I send to Mexico City.) For future items, talk to someone at the USPS or somewhere with multiple delivery services to see what they recommend for your specific situation.

Hope your item gets there.

I live in Colombia and all packages that are sent to me are sent either by FEDEX or UPS. Anything less than that and they are bound to be lost or stolen. Packages should never be sent to latin countries by USPS. Even letters get delayed or lost in the mixup of international mail. Usually takes 2 to 3 weeks for an ordinary letter to get here from Miami. :dubious:

Damn… I guess I can’t ever count on gettin g my Arizona plates… I’ll have to see if I can drive back up there before they try mailing them here…

Just a note to follow up this post.

The package arrived in Mexico in fine shape yesterday. A bit over 6 weeks, but at least I know it made it. Thanks to all who replied.

I used to live in Colombia (B/quilla), and I always wondered why mail from Colombia to the US takes so much longer than mail from the US to Colombia. Is it Avianca, or US Customs?

I think it is the US Customs and the Colombian Aduana. Both are screening mail to look for suspicious mail or packages.
