sending mail to mexico

A friend of mine has gone to Mexico to spend a month at language school. I would really like to send her a letter, but I have no idea how to send mail to Mexico. I’ve heard that it can take 2-3 weeks for mail to get there, so if I want to send her something I guess I need to send it soon.

Can anyone tell me how to address the letter and send it? She is staying at a private home - the woman who lives there is named “Senora Flores”. I know the street address.

Another question, are there postal codes in Mexico? How do I go about looking one up? The town is San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato state. (sp?)

Ask your post office.

Mexican postal codes are available here:
http://rtn.net.mx/sepomex/copostal.html in Spanish only.

“Care of” is “al cuidado de”.

BTW, sorry to spoil your fun, pero “vez” es un sustantivo femenino en español.

If you want to assure delivery, however, you need to send it registered … Mail service in Mexico is pretty notorious for inefficiency. Better – find a way to fax to the kid.

It’s sorta been said already, but just to recap:

Getting mail to any foreign country is pretty quick.

However, once it arrives, it’s at the mercy of their own postal system, which may or may not be efficient.

In general, for international mail, all that is relevant for our postal system is the name of the country.

That directs the mail to wherever–the rest is up to that country.

I’ve mailed letters to Russia where the only thing written in “Latin” characters was “Russia,” with everything else in the address in Cyrillic.

But, your best bet is to send it registered, as has already been said.

Mail to Mexico (and Canada) is a little more expensive than domestice First Class (~48¢ for half-ounce, ~55¢ for one ounce–the PO can tell you exactly), but not quite so expensive as air mail to other countries (60¢ for half-ounce, $1 for one ounce).

just so you know. you can send it federal express, and it will get there quickly.
