Mail order or internet clothes shopping. Does anyone do this?

For certain things, yes. Also, it’s fun to get a good selection of things for cheap. And there are some things I can’t seem to find in stores anymore for some reason–you know those fuzzy track pants? Not the towelly ones, but the ones that feel like I stuffed animal? I could gladly wear those every day until I die, but for some reason I can’t find the damn things in stores anymore. I can be reasonably sure they’ll fit me when i buy them online.

I still insist on trying on jeans and shoes.

Just ordered my new “work at home” wardrobe last night from Old Navy. Easy, inexpensive, free shipping and it took about 15 minutes! I absolutely HATE shopping. When I go to the mall (maybe once a year?) it’s straight in for what I want and out again. For instance - last week I bought a new vacuum cleaner. I did my research online, went to the store, bought it and was home again in less than 30 minutes. Did I mention I hate the mall?

Now, if I could just find my style of tennis shoes online I’d be in business!

I buy lots of sports jerseys online, for two reasons–they only come in like 3 or 4 sizes to begin with, and the teams I root for are all far away and pretty much never have items in stores here.

I buy from Lands End all the time–I’m honest with my measurements and the clothes fit me very well.

I’ve only done it for brands where I already know my size, and only for things where precise fit isn’t important AND the online item is on sale (i.e. I once bought an Eddie Bauer long down winter coat on end-of-season clearance; the petite stuff is usually catalog-only, and they never sold that particular item in the store anyway, and it was something like 60% off).

For most other stuff, I’m too fussy about fit and feel. I was disappointed a couple of times, and by the time you have to repackage stuff to ship it back, you’ve lost all the convenience value.

Seconded!

I’d never bought clothes online before, but then my SO introduced me to Bluefly.

They have some great stuff, at excellent prices, and they really stick by their no-questions-asked return policy. You can return stuff for a refund, and pay a nominal shipping cost (only a few bucks), or you can return it for store credit and pay nothing.

For example, i recently bought nine Ben Sherman summer shirts (love Ben Sherman). They were $30 each, while the usual store price is around $55 plus tax. When they came, i tried them all on, and decided that i only wanted to keep six. Just put the rest back in the box, attached the pre-paid shipping label, and sent them back for a $90 credit on my account.

Great service.

I’m not truly housebound, but I do have congestive heart failure and mobility problems. For example, my knees tend to collapse unexpectedly. In addition, I’m hard to please…I only want cotton fabrics (with touches of elastic for my undies). Also, I like only certain styles and colors. It’s just a heck of a lot easier for me to shop online. I’ve never had to return anything, but I’m very, very picky about what I put in my cart. I’m that way in a brick-and-mortar store, too, I very rarely return anything. If I buy something, it’s because I’ve decided that I want it and can afford it.

I’ve been buying pants and shirts online from Haband for several years now. A friend recommended their mail-order service, and I found that they have good-quality clothes in larger sizes at good prices - cheaper than the local big-and-tall men’s store, and much more convenient than going out to the store. Every so often they have sales where they drop the extra charges for larger sizes, at which point I stock up on pants.

I am housebound, still, I love clothing. I need gentle soft clothing, because I have skin sensitivities. I love Flax©, and online shop at a truly kind site, www.Tender Treasures.com, but there are other places that carry this soft cotton clothing. Besides being gentle on the skin,
it is current and pretty,…fun to wear.
Online shopping can save money, too. The amount of time + gas spent on regular shopping is more than P&H charges, I’ve found. And politeness is the norm with online stores, IMHO.

Sorry! I’ve never posted a site until now.
Let me try again, pretty please?
It’s/www.tendertreasures.com/

Okay…this one should work.
Again, all apologies!

Die-hard Land’s End shopper checking in. I like them for the quality and for the fact that I can return anything at anytime for any reason for a refund or exchange. Hard to find that kind of service in a walk-in men’s store.

Don’t even pay for shipping the stuff back. Of course I’ve only sent back a couple of items: a par of shorts who’s built-in belt buckle broke, and a pair of suede loafers that got rain-spots on them.

Admittedly, I was worried when they got sold to Sears, but so far there’s been no change in service that I can see.

Quasi

I buy scrubs online for work—cheaper, cuter and delivered to my door! I work in a large hospital in a small city, so I see the same scrubs on a lot of people but* I* get stopped a lot in the cafeteria with “Where did you get that?”

No one where I live sells kilts, so…yes. Frequently.

Addiction is a lonely road.

Yes, I buy a lot of clothes online. The main thing is I’m a guy, so pretty much any pair of 36/32 pants will fit without me having to try them on. My reasons for shopping online are many, but can be summarized as: it’s fun, it’s quick, it’s convenient, it’s (usually) cheaper and there’s far more stuff available online. Honestly, I can shop at UK stores just as easily than US ones - how can you do THAT in the B&M world?.

My only problems come with shoes. I would really wear a size 8 and 3/4 if they made such a thing. Often size 9 is slightly too big, size 8 is way too small and 8 1/2 usually isn’t available. However, I recently got lucky - the soles on my old Doc Martens boots split, so I had to order a new pair online. Sierra Trading Post hooked me up with some new DM boots for less than $60 shipped and they fit perfectly!

Another one who hates the ‘shopping experence’ . When I do venture into a cloths store, It’s like I’m working in a nuke reactor, I have a limited time to get what I want and get out before the shopping radiation levels reach a critical level. Once this level is reached, I MUST leave, doesn’t matter if I got something in my hand that I want, I just put it down and walk out.

Also if I have everything I need and am standing in line and reach the level I will put down my order on the floor, if needed, and leave.

Another good on-line catalog shop. I always look for the close-outs and have gotten a very nice winter-parka, silk long-johns and Hawaiian shirts from them. In short, unless it’s something I need immediately, like underwear or socks, I shop for it on-line. I hate going to Waly World!

Q

Hey Cyn, where do you order your scrubs? I need new uniforms, and I am a huge fan of internet shopping. I’ve used allheart.com a few times with good results. For regular clothes I usually shop Chadwick’s of Boston or Lerner.

I’m also a Sierra Trading Post junkie. They’re very good about crediting returns, like the $20 Birkenstock sandals that ended up being too narrow for my fat feet. I bought an awesome $300 red wool duffel coat there for $50, and Doc’s in a unique style for $35.

Another time that I shop online is for jeans. If I find a pair in the store I like, I’ll get online and buy a few more pairs, because there usually aren’t many pairs stocked in the stores in long or X-long lengths. I also have no qualms about stocking up on things like basic fitted t-shirts online. I won’t however, buy things like fitted dresses without first trying them on.

I’ve shopped by mail for coats and funny t-shirts, things that are not closely fitted.

I buy online. I’m not housebound, or isolated, I just have better things to do with my time than wander around shops.
