This may be a bit premature as Governor Baldacci has been very … diplomatic … about things so far, saying he hasn’t made up his mind whether he will sign the bill, but my bet is he will. He’s not the type to buck the prevailing winds, as it were.
Oh, there will be some hellacious protests from Michael “Oh Please, I Am So Not Gay” Heath and his Maine Family Policy Council, but after months of raving and ranting about what the people really want and collecting 30 or 40 signatures for a “people’s veto” he’ll be about as relevant as Wayne Newton at Lollapalooza.
Soon you will be able to choose (in deference to Not Quite Miss USA) between gay or opposite marriage in the Pine Tree State.
Also, the D.C. city council just voted today to recognize same-sex marriages from other states. If I understand correctly, it needs to get approved by both the mayor and Congress, so it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out and what sort of precedent it may set.
I find it sad that California, normally on the cutting edge of legal trends, was the first state to pass a SSM bill in the legislature (vetoed), yet here we are living under Prop 8 while other states have seen fit to go forward, move ahead, and whip it good.
Wow! Maine, of all places! (No offense, I guess, but Jack Batty’s stories of life in Maine over the years have not led me to think of it as a hotbed of progressive thought.) That’s really awesome!
Wow…so if this and the Noo Hampster bill passes, then most of New England will have GAY MARRIAGE!
Maine and NH are conservative for “libral Yankees”…but they’re still pretty libral over all. It’s not like they are “Deep South” states.
Boy oh boy Phred Phelps and His Messed Up Crew must be really foaming at the mouth.
This is really amazing. I’m bi myself…and I remember how back in the mid 90’s how freaking confused and scared I was about the feelings I was having towards a particular girl. It’s amazing to see how much our culture has changed…who knows?
