Yes. From experience I’ve learned you need to do these things in baby steps. I sent in some changes just now; the developers doing the work are offshore so there will be a lag. Assuming this latest round of fixes comes out OK, we’ll move on to the next three or four things, quoted spoilers among them.
Another thing I’ve noticed: even Guests have all their post information displayed. Before, that was a member feature, and Guests only had a join date.
I’d been wondering why there were so many Dopers whose location I didn’t remember, when it’s just right there on all their posts.
Not sure if you want to “fix” that or not. I don’t plan on doing so in my script.
BTW, I do in fact recommend letting your contractor know about my script. The changes I’ve done seem to be well received, and might cut down on the time needed to figure out a solution for things. I include a whole lot of comments.
I don’t know if this has been mentioned, and since you can’t just click on a page number (you have to open a box, enter a page number, and Enter), it’s too much trouble to search the pages.
The Post New Thread button has text very close in colour to the button itself. I know what the button is, but it’s hard to read anyway.
Okay, who’s the fool who decided that all one needs for “go to first unread post” in a thread is an itsy bitsy teeny tiny polk…er, button with a little v insude it? That’s what I’m getting while reading the boards on my tablet.
Complaint number two: I know I am not the only colorblind person who participates on this board. I’m now seeing big chunks of pages that look to me to be big chunks of one color. Congratulations, new board designer; your free color vision acuity test shows me what I already know: I cannot distinguish between certain color combinations. Whoever hired that dumbass to design this scheme should have checked if he or she failed the design course.
Actually, “View First Unread” is still there. It’s cunningly hidden by being the same color as the background.
God dammit, why are the page numbers in a multi-page thread now invisible? I am 40 years old, and countless age polls show I’m still on the young side for a poster and even I’m beginning to have vision changes, so I can only imagine how this looks for older posters - why the hell are you trying to make things impossible to read??
White on white is the new infrared.
Ed said he sent the request to his programmers to fix it today. They’re overseas, so it’ll probably be overnight whenever working hours are for them.
Apart from white-on-white text which is obviously a bug that you’re going to fix, could you change the color used for the “Go to last post” buttons in the forum display? Gray that light against the white background suggests that the button is deactivated - needs to have a little more contrast.
I noticed this also and requested a change (the text will be white). Same change for the Reply button.
I’m listing the changes for the next round below so people don’t keep posting the same complaint:
-
I assume you’re referring to the arrow next to the name of the most recent poster in the thread. This appears in both thread display and forum display pages. It used to be medium blue. I’ll put that in the next round of fixes once the bunch I sent in today goes through.
-
I figure to do the same for the “Reverse Sort Order” arrow button next to “Last Post” in the header on thread display pages.
-
Spoiler text to be hidden unless “Show” is clicked.
-
Clicking on “Multi-Quote” should invoke “quote this post” icon (quotation marks appear). Right now you have to click on the icon itself to do this.
-
In “Closed Thread” button, change text to white to improve readability.
-
Change highlighting in thread display pages from dark green text on light green to white text on dark blue background.
-
In “Quick Reply” box, change highlighting from green to white text on dark blue background.
Fixing “white on white” issue in page navigation buttons for multi-page threads was submitted today.
There is a weird bug where an embedded link followed by a period is broken into three separate lines (on phones anyway). I’ll have them work on this after we get the colors more or less right.
Actually on my mobile, the last user to post isn’t even displayed at all in the forum view. If there are no new posts, without the last user displayed I can’t quickly go to the end of the thread.
Is the green highlighting on the list for death killing at some point? I know it technically works, unlike many of the things that are getting fixed now, but it’s like nails on the chalk board for me. I hate it.
Just tested… Bug is still there where typing in the quick reply, then changing orientation (on an iPhone) causes Safari to crash and reload the page (erasing your written text).
Highlighting text in the Quick Reply box makes it completely unreadable. It appears to be a sky blue text on a sky blue background. It does the same in the Advanced Reply box AND (now that I’ve checked) anywhere on the page you double-click to highlight. This is WORSE than the lime green others are reporting.
I hope this is just an intermediate step, but for crying out loud, has the contractor never heard of testing BEFORE release? That’s nearly the first thing taught in a programming course.
On experimenting, I see that, when narrowed to phone width, the forum display page collapses from four columns (one of which is Last Post) to one column (the forum descriptions). Is that what you’re referring to?
Highlighting used to be white text on dark blue. This should be an easy fix - I’ll add it.
This may take some investigation. Let me get the low-hanging fruit out of the way first.
This looks like dark green on light green to me. Be that as it may, I can make it white on dark blue, the way it used to be.
Unfortunately, no. This is what I see when on my phone in landscape mode.
This is max zoomed out, you can see the select box for moderation options but no view of who posted last.
This is an older view, but still looks like this.
Same thing, I have the select box at far right, but no view of who posted last.
Is there a reason why you’re sticking to this new template when most people on desktops, tablets, and phones are saying they preferred the previous one instead?
It seems like you’re going through an awful lot a of steps for not much gain.
Is there anyone on-site with experience in vBulletin maintenance and some HTML/CSS/PHP? Like, a person who is a member, or cares about the dope? Cuz I know I’m not the only one in these last few ATMB threads who could have fixed a large number of these issues within a few hours. It’s been three days since the skin launched. It’s been at least a full day since errors like the page numbers and “view last post” came up. You guys can’t find a volunteer? Or learn some basics yourself? Hell, when it comes to the page numbers, I did half the CSS work for you, and I haven’t touched vBulletin 3.8 in half a decade. Is this the same contractor who made the last changes, where they fixed very little and still broke stuff? Can you supervise them and make sure they don’t fuck this up too?
I mean, I’m glad you’re trying, but you might wanna consider finding a code buff here on the forum and working with them instead - they actually might care about the results.
Well, y’know, it’s not as though Giraffe actually runs a vBulletin board. It’s not as though he was a mod here for years or anything. It’s not as though he and Fenris both haven’t offered multiple times to help and have reiterated about ninety two times how very simple it actually is to allow users to choose which skin they prefer. It’s not as though Giraffe Boards aren’t amply provided with all kinds of different skins of wildy varying style, all of which, y’know, work, so you can be pretty sure that the guys who set those up might have some insight on how to fix this giant muck of a mess. It’s not as though it’s a requirement for someone “overseas” to handle something as simple as a skin change on a message board. I recall when most of the Raffe skins were being built and tested it took like maybe a couple hours with feedback from users to get them fixed. The “Osteoblast” skin I prefer was whomped up by one of our members in jig time and it’s lovely. Why exactly TPTB of this board are being so wilfully ignorant and obstinate about accepting help that’s been freely offered by long standing members who’ve demonstrated for eight years now their ability to make changes in vBulletin and keep it all running and looking spiffy I simply can’t comprehend. Because of course it’s so much better a course of action just to guddle about for days over what is, after all, a completely trivial exercise well within the capability of any fairly enthusiastic hobbyist. People do this shit all the time for fun, but no–we must appeal to those “overseas” who have amply demonstrated that they are unusually crap at this. So reassuring to know it’s all being handled. Kudos, really.
