Major bugs in SDMB re-skin fixed. What do you think?

Yup. I just ditched Tapatalk.

Here is what I see at 100% sizing in Chrome, Win 10, on a 22" monitor.

Here are the issues I can see just on that page:
[ul]
[li]The join/location/post count do not align. There are three different positions and on other pages there are even more.[/li][li]The blue bars that go across are really distracting, and at work, make the page very obvious.[/li][li]The font size in quoted text is reduced from the post itself. eta: same thing happening with text in the bulleted items[/li][li]The options in the bottom right of each post for replying/quote etc. are really intrusive with both text and an image. Should be one or the other.[/li][li]The arrow at the bottom right is also pretty intrusive.[/li][/ul]
Not pictured, highlighting text is a odd shade of green now.
Here is what I see using my Samsung S7 with Android at the top of a forum page load:
[ul]
[li]The top 1/2 of the screen real estate is taken by mostly not useful things. The title, a giant menu/post new thread button.[/li][li]The display of the folder “Straight Dope Message Board” adjacent to the “welcome” message is superfluous, since the same folder tree hierarchy is listed right below the grey bar.[/li][/ul]

Here is what it looks like lower down the page:
[ul]
[li]It looks like the width of the display is now resized based on the length of the post title, which scrunches up the screen.[/li][li]The button to go to the last post in the thread is gone, along with the who posted last. Those are functions I use every time I visit the boards. They are visible on my laptop, but not my mobile.[/li][li]There is a floating forum jump dialogue box at the bottom which is moderately helpful, but it looks pretty clunky. Same thing for the big up arrow.[/li][/ul]
Not pictured, titles not visible in posts on mobile, makes it harder to view the “Moderating” label.

On Firefox 55.0.3 running MacOS 10.11.6 and Intel i5 (mid-2011) everything seems to be functioning a-okay … although the “like” button isn’t showing up for me …

Why not test this stuff on that avalotech site? I’m sure you could get a bunch of volunteers from here to cover all of the browsers/devices. Going live here with this mess is just asking for headaches.

I’m using the latest Firefox on Windows 10 to view the SDMB.

For me, some of the user names are breaking across two lines. So far I’ve noticed it with Budget Player Cadet’s name, but haven’t been looking closely for others.

Also, on the forum page (not the list of forums, but the list of threads in a forum), the Forum Tools and Search this Forum options on a completely separate bar from everything else instead of in the Threads in Forum bar, and the Forum Tools is all the way on the left of the page and the Search this Forum is all the way on the right.

I’m also not happy with the blue shading for each post to a thread. It’s a little harder to read than the plain black on white we used to have.

I understand you did this to improve readability on mobile devices, but it’s buggered up reading it on a laptop or desktop. Most web sites can detect which device you’re using to read them with and adjust the formatting accordingly. Why couldn’t you do that instead of forcing us all to this? Yuck.

Bone hit everything I hate about the reskin so far.

Other than the right-justification of the post count and location being screwy, I don’t see any other actual bugs.

My requests:
Get rid of the blue bars. They are distracting and make the page too obvious when viewing at work.

Get rid of the Scroll to Top button – seems utterly useless.

Change the quote boxes so that you can see them again (the quote boxes are barely visible now), don’t change the font to italic, and don’t shrink the size.

Change the New Posts button back to blue or something more subtle than fire engine red.

Change the highlight color from, what, kelly green?

Turn off the signatures by default. I’ve never seen so many signatures!

It took me about 15 seconds to get used to it.

I like it. But then, I am not resistant to change.

I’ll echo most of Bone’s comments. The dark blue bar between posts has too much contrast, but I guess I can live with it. The varying font sizes with primary text, quotes, and bullets is very distracting and difficult to read. The randomly aligned user info (join date, etc.) is very annoying.

I also noticed the Straight Dope logo at the top of every page used to take you to the main site, but now just goes to the forum home. There doesn’t seem to be a link back to the main site.

Emphasis mine, because that’s what I’m responding to.

The Scroll to Top actually IS useful on the threads page if, like me, you’ve set your options to display 200 posts. I agree it’s not much use on the Forums list page or when you’re replying.

A contrary opinion - this is probably the one change I really like. I know I could hit the Home key, but I read and scroll with my mouse, and I like the single click without having to move my hand to the keyboard.

Well, I like the ‘scroll up’ button, but I can I’d best not get too attached to it.

I also like seeing the sigs, and when I get tired of seeing them, I can go into User Profile and simply untick the box that makes them show.

I see the sloppy misalignment of the ‘Join Date’ et. al information, but none of this stuff is a big deal to me. I’m sure it will be fixed eventually.

The dark bars (which seem more purple than blue to me) are too much of a contrast and a little painful on the eyes.

Other than that, no issues here to speak of.

Firefox, Win 10, 17" laptop screen.

Perhaps when you eat dinner tonight, rather than eat food, you could (for a change) eat your own poo.

What, you don’t like that idea? Why? Are you resistant to change?

I think I use the board differently than everyone else (for example, I almost never view it logged in – I just log in to post something), but what’s so useful at the top of the page that you’d want to scroll all the way up there? If you have a 200-post screen, what are you looking for up there?

Anyway, it doesn’t bother me that much either way, but on a phone, it gets in the way.

One other comment – make it obvious which page you’re on when looking at the page numbers. They used to all be underlined links, except the page you were on, but now they all look the same to me. Then, you can remove the Page x of n note next to the page numbers.

Well you failed at that. It’s much harder to read now on an iPhone.

A bug to fix: put back the dates and times of the last posts for threads! If I scroll through thread titles I now have no idea if a thread is something new or if the last post was a week ago.

Because of that I can also no longer click on the “last posted” info to go straight to the end of the thread.

I agree with all these points, and as I mentioned in the other thread:

[ul]
[li]Titles in posts are in a smaller point size than the main text.[/ul] [/li]
Dismiss the above point as ‘aesthetics’ if you must, but it looks ridiculous.

Still using IE; highlighted text is medium blue there.

Yes my experience is like Bone is showing.

nothing against the changes in any specific detail but the overall is it looks like a very botched affaire

Here is an example of the green shade when highlighting.

Other things I just noticed
[ul]
[li]The color/size differentiation when quoting is hard to distinguish from the actual post. In this same image that quotes me, you can make out the difference, but it’s very slight and with the change in fonts as well, it’s not super clear what is being quoted and what isn’t, on first glance.[/li][li]In the quote box, the arrow (hyperlink) to go to the quoted post is now a faint shade of grey, more difficult to see it being offset as a quote and doesn’t highlight when moused over. (what Ritter posted in #27)[/li][/ul]

This is the thing that has been bothering me the most. Since quoted material is no longer in an obviously visible box, I’ve been mistaking (at least momentarily) what someone has quoted from an earlier post for what they’re actually saying themselves.

I could be looking for thread tools, but usually I’m looking for the forum name to click on. Or, when replying to a thread, if I’ve scrolled down to be sure no one else has already covered what I want to say, it helps get back to the reply box that much faster. Luckily for me, I rarely if ever read the board on a mobile device, so the UP arrow is actually outside of the board margins.
