I watched the first one of the summer season, and I already hate Rusty more than ever. Does that kid ever stop whining? Other than that, I’m happy it’s back.
I’m kind of surprised by this. I didn’t think there was any doubt at all that Rusty is gay – OTOH I missed much of the last season.
I think the way the show is handling it is that all of the characters “know” Rusty is gay, but are so polite that no one will mention it. I think Provenza at least wishes Rusty would admit it to himself and get it out in the open. Man up, if you will. But meta-wise, the show won’t commit. Rusty is not officially gay (unless I missed a bit of dialog somewhere), leading to speculations such as Justin_Bailey’s.
Rusty doesn’t admit to himself that he’s gay? I’ve missed a lot recently but that seems very far fetched to me.
I’m pretty sure Rusty finally came out last season, and was surprised that no one else was surprised. There was also a story line about him crushing on one of the guys on the TV set where he was interning. I can’t imagine they’ll dwell on it any more.
What I mean is, in the scenes we see of Rusty*are what the show runners choose to show us. In the 99% of his life that we don’t see, I’m sure would be telling one way or the other. But the show presented Rusty as this SNL “It’s Pat!” character. While both Rusty and Pat know what they are, the show (and the skit, but that was for humor effect) refused to play fair, and every scene could be interpreted either way. It’s like the show runners were specifically trying to have it both ways.
*I’m thinking I forgot some of last season, and that maybe the issue was finally settled. Especially when the poster above reminded me of his apparent crush on the guy from the show. But still…he could just have had a bromance thing going. Maybe Rusty doesn’t know how to relate to people at all. See? There’s that element of doubt again.
