I’m voting for Cody Ross for Governor on November 2nd.
The home plate umpire’s strike zone is atrocious. It seems to run from somewhere slightly above or below the knees to some point above or below the belt, or perhaps the numbers, and from one side of the plate to the other, give or take 6-8 inches.
Except when it doesn’t.
Given that they seem to have developed technology that can instantly display whether or not the ball was in the strike zone, I’m trying to come up with a good reason why that technology shouldn’t be used to call balls and strikes, and I am failing to come up with one.
<sigh>

Eh, we’ll get 'em next time!
Good game for the Phillies. For most of the game I was lamenting the fact that they just can’t hit and wondering if Oswalt could hold on to the lead. But, the break out inning went a long way to settling my nerves.
This game was a lot closer to a pitching duel than last night’s game. Oswalt was awesome all the way around (he really should be fined for running the stop sign). I was really impressed with how Sanchez was able to turn it around after that not so great first inning.
Cody Ross has been amazing. He looks like one of those magnet men. But, 3 homeruns in two games against these guys? Awesome stuff.
I think Utley really likes the other team’s fans to hate him. Something like - “I grew up a Dodgers fan.” was his personal quote during the lineup announcement. Speaking of Utley. I liked his at bats tonight. He didn’t get any big hits (I can’t remember if he got any hits at all. I don’t think so.) But, he had that fly ball to get victorino to third. And, it was awesome to see him stealing second base after the walk in the first. Just keeping everyone on their toes.
Goofy people around Philadelphia were complaining about Ryan Howard because he was on the sidelines of the Eagles game. Who cares? Does he need to be meditating all day long? He had a pretty good game (although, that strike out sucked), so that removes any of the complainers traction. I can get behind constructive criticism of the guy and his too big contract, but that was just dumb. On top of that the little bit before the game of the Phanatic driving him from Lincoln Financial to CPB was pretty brilliant and funny.
It was nice to see Rollins get a hit. Not only for the reasons of the game, but I am hoping that’s the beginning of the end of his slump and a turn towards good. I like him hitting 6th when he is hitting. It’s like having a new leadoff hitter in the middle of the lineup, with Ruiz there to bat him home.
Yeah, electronic balls and strikes would be far better. But, I don’t see that happening anytime soon. I didn’t mind the balls and strikes last night or tonight. It’s not that they were good. But, they were consistently bad on each side, so it evens out.
I could see Hamels having a good game on Tuesday. He’s been pitching really well lately. But, I continue to worry about the Phillies offense.
So, fun game. We’ll see what happens in San Francisco.
Well, that game sucked, but we’ll win the next 7! Seriously big game tonight. I think Cliff Lee is scheduled to get rocked tonight in the Bronx. He really needs to save up his best pitching for next year, when he’s on our team.
[bolding mine] Which is pretty much the definition of the Giants.
It’s the opposite: we don’t go nuts and panic every time they lose. They got one out of two in Texas, which is all they needed. It’s a best-of-seven series and nobody expected them to sweep the Rangers. The starting pitching has been bad but I don’t see a lot to get worked up about. Tonight’s a big one and I’ll go to sleep feeling a ton better if they win. On the other hand this is Texas’ best shot to get the lead and winning three in a row at home in the playoffs isn’t easy.
You gotta be kidding. Like Marley says, you’re misinterpreting. The overriding thing about Yankee fans is supreme confidence. (Of course, if you’re a Yankee hater you’ll call it arrogance. :)) Even when they’re in a hole, we always think the Yankees have a chance to come back and win. And they’ve proven it right often enough, like on Friday night (even if they missed on Saturday).
Well, yesterday sucked, except for Cody Ross. Bleh.
My friends on Facebook are surprised I’m surprised, but I’m genuinely  at the low-class and moronic behavior of the Phillies fans. Makes me wish I had given into temptation and called them out when I had a layover in Philly on Saturday morning. (Lots of people wearing Phillies paraphernalia wandering around, was deeply deeply tempted to heckle them, but I refrained.)
An hour + from first pitch for Yankees/Rangers. Seems like most people have already awarded this game to Lee and Texas. No doubt he’s been unreal in the post season, but Andy Pettitte has had some success too. I’ll take my chances with Pettitte any day. Here’s hoping for a good game (and a Yankees victory, of course.)
On a side note, a local Yankee “legend” passed on. I always called him “Freddy the Fan” but the papers are calling him “Freddy Sez”. I’ve taken his spoon and banged his frying pan many times over the years. R.I.P. Freddy.
Freddy died? Oh Man, he has been there my whole life. That is sad.
Dismissing Andy and the Yanks in favor of Cliff Lee is sort of funny to watch and hear.
Huh?
Who would these “most people” be? Just how many people are calling the Yankees underdogs in their own stadium during the playoffs? I think that Texas has a perfectly decent chance of winning the game, but it’s simply silly to suggest that it’s a foregone conclusion, and i’d be interested to know who has done that so i can cross them off my (ever-shrinking) list of intelligent baseball commentators.
I’ve heard the same buzz actually. Boils down to Yanks are in trouble now as Lee will win game 3 and AJ will lose game 4.
I’m sure you can point me in the direction of some such “buzz.”
And i don’t mean some mouthbreathing moron in the Comments section on ESPN or MLB.com. I mean someone who actually has some credibility on the issue of baseball.
That is not really what what buzz means. It is talk radio, interviews, commentators etc.
Well, now, we can’t all meet the standards set by those crazy kids on the west coast who fucking murder each other over baseball rivalries, can we?
Not the start I was hoping for.
Much better, now the Yanks need to scrape out a few runs.
