I came home to my wife watching Wonder Woman 1984. Apparently, people making wishes that are granted is a bad thing. But that’s not what this thread is about. Every time I heard ‘Make a wish!’ it reminded me of this show from when I was a kid.
My wish after listening to the first fifteen seconds of that song is to be able to sucker punch that guy. Maybe he’s just collateral damage from my reaction to any mention of Wonder Woman 1984 which took a perfectly cromulent superhero and taught her to…actually, I couldn’t and can’t make any sense out of what moral lesson the story was trying to present. Anyway, now I’m angry and I’m not even sure why. Thanks for nothing, Johnny.
It’s vaguely familiar to me. I anticipated some parts of it but have no clear memory of it. From the credits, it looks like the singer is Tom Chapin, whom Wikipedia shows to be the brother of Harry Chapin, who’s also among the credits.
Sucker punch? What’s funny about that? It does seem a bit ingenuous, but it was 1971 fer chrissake, and it looks like it was aimed at (inner-city?) kids for viewing during their morning consumption of cartoons.
The singer reminds me of Adam Driver’s character in Inside Lleweyn Davis except without the ironic subtext, and any mention of WW84 reminds me of how DC Films took their one unambiguously well-developed character and completely trashed it to make some cheap ‘Eighties nostalgia jokes.
Wow! That’s a blast from the past! I remember watching this as a kid. Anybody remember CBS’s Children’s Film Festival with Kukla, Fran, and Ollie? Or what about Hot Dog on NBC?
But of course! Skinny and Fatty, Hand in Hand…I still remember them! Watch out Michael! Dangerous waters ahead!
The three things that always told me Saturday mornings were over and I had to go outside: The end of KF&O, the end of Lancelot Link, or the “For Pet’s Sake” end credits of the Monkees, depending what month or what year for what CBS ended Sat mornings with.
For some reason I associate that ‘Make a Wish’ show with another 70s educational kids show called ‘Big Blue Marble’. I’m guessing they played back-to-back on Saturday (or possibly Sunday) mornings. Anyone remember this?
Yes. When I was reminded of Make A Wish and searched for it, I searched on “make a wish” “big blue marble”. I thought it might have been a segment, rather than a stand-alone show.
Make a Wish always seemed stupid to me, even as a child. If I could make a wish at that time, I would’ve wished to be able to fly or run as fast as a car. The guy on the show was always asking dumb shit like “Did you ever wish to be a button?” “Did you ever wish to be a watch?”
I was like, “No Dimtwad, I wanna play piano like Liberace. Why the fuck would I want to be a button?”
I vaguely remembered it, so I did a google search and found the opening on youtube. For a bit of trivia, it looks like the building where Marlo worked was based on the Citigroup Center in New York City, which had to have some structural refitting when an engineering student discovered it might blow over in a strong wind.
