make it up in volume

I can’t seem to find who originally said the line “What we lose per item we make up in volume.” Does anyone know?

Madman Muntz of Los Angeles used car selling fame used to use bilboards to advertise his business. Slogans like “I want to give them away, but my wife won’t let me, she’s crazy” or “Offical west coast distributor US mint” and of course “I lose a little on each one, but I make it up in volume”

Muntz was actually a very successful appliance salesman that went into the new car business. He designed, built and sold his cars from 1951 to 1954. After the car business failed he went into the electronics business selling TV’s and radios. He was the developer of the multi track playback for the masses and his designs led to the first 8 track tapes. A lot more info about him can be found here.

Thanks for the info. No wonder I couldn’t find it searching quotes in places like bartletts.
