Make the Banner Smaller

Just a friendly suggestion, can we make the “The Straight Dope” banner vertically narrower? On widescreen monitors, especially laptops, the amount of dead space at the top of the screen is just needlessly large. On a 16:9 screen the banner claims over 1/8 the screen and pushed the “reply” and “submit” buttons below the fold on simple replies.

It’s a small thing but tightening up the layout and minimizing dead space would go a long ways to making the board more usable to folks using progressively smaller laptops and netbooks.

I suggested this a while back when they were having bandwidth issues (and because it also made my SDMB usage in work more obvious) and was told to take a hike.

The actual image is just this:

(9Kb)

The rest is achieved by CSS.

If you use Opera, you can selectively block the entire banner so that your page starts at:

Straight Dope Message Board > Main > About This Message Board

To block the banner, just right click on an SDMB page, select “Block Content”, select the banner and click OK.

That should solve your issue.

Horizontally too, while you are at it. That alone would improve mobile usability by a lot since it would make us able to zoom in without forcing a side scroll.

I’m pretty sure that’s the web browser’s fault, as the banner is only set to go as wide as the screen.

We have considered a smaller Banner, but since the ban lever requires the same force as bench pressing about 472 lbs, we have been forced to continue to retain the services of a larger Banner. Smaller Banners simply cannot throw the lever.

Can’t you make it a frame, so it’s always visible, taking up part of screen? I love when other websites do that…
