Make the Conservative Case for Overriding Various COVID restrictions

Please note that a bar is not an entity which takes public money.

You asked for examples of conservative overreach impacting private businesses. I provided one (of many).

Splitting hairs between masks/vaccines is purposely missing the overall thrust of their actions.

Anyway, as noted above, not really interested in the rhetorical splitting of hairs over what is, to me, the great moral crisis of our age. No need to respond, thx.

I specifically asked for a law which prohibits a private business from requiring masks, as Chronos claimed. If you don’t have a cite that supports that claim it’s fine. It’s not splitting hairs.

I am not in Texas but if you read my post above, I too am sympathetic to the state prohibiting businesses from requiring vaccine cards. A state prohibiting private businesses from requiring masks for everyone is totally different, and wholly unacceptable in my eyes. I am unaware of any states doing the latter.

I think Chronos was mistaken. Some Republican governors are banning private businesses from requiring proof of vaccination, and also preventing public schools and other government-run things from having a mask mandate, but I don’t know of any law, rule, or executive order that’s preventing a private business from having a mask mandate.

I really appreciate the mostly civil tone in this thread so far, with just a few exceptions, and I would love to keep it that way. I’m on vacation in Canada, which is why I’m not responding much to this thread, but I am reading the responses. On a related note, indoor mask mandates are everywhere in Montreal and Quebec City.

Because the CDC isn’t just throwing shit on a wall and hoping it sticks. They make calls based on the best information available at the time. Information gets updated; calls change. But you then make the “leap” that since recommendations can change then why bother to listen. Such an opinion is uninformed and clearly anti-science.

Collective social action, such as such as mask mandates and vaccines, is always an immediate straight line to Stalinist and Maoist mass murders. Therefore, if we prevent Joe Biden from killing 50 million in the Communist labor camps, then letting a million people die is actually pretty acceptable. Mao. Communism. Stalin. CCP. ooga booga.

Inconsistent guidance - assuming for the sake of argument that the CDC’s guidance was inconsistent over time - is a valid attack on the CDC’s credibility. It is not a valid attack on the merits of the CDC’s current or previous recommendations, though.

For the record, I don’t think that @UltraVires was himself making that argument: He called it a hypothetical conservative argument. So responses to that argument shouldn’t be addressed to @UltraVires himself, but to the hypothetical conservative he was channeling.

Abbott’s got the 'rona now.

Not really. He tested positive in routine daily testing, but has no symptoms. And despite that, he’s being treated with regeneron.

He’s also vaccinated.

The best reason I’ve heard of for kids under 12 not wearing masks was from a member of our county board of supervisors who said the straps would pull on their ears, permanently making them all look like Jug Head since they were still growing. This was his reason for voting against requiring them in the counties public schools. Guess who he voted for as Pres.?

Even if that were true, why wouldn’t he simply suggest they wear masks that don’t pull on the ears?
For example, masks with straps that go around the back of the head instead of behind the ears?

No wait, what am I thinking?! Straps behind the head will squeeze the brain up and make kids look like Megamind.
Truly this is a complicated situation, with absolutely valid concerns.

I’ll take a stab at this.

  1. You must risk your life for the economy. It’s your civic duty. Shutdowns are tyranny.

  2. You should be free not to take the vaccine, GOP leaders will take the vaccine secretly so as not to offend anyone’s delicate sensibilities. Forget what I said about civic duty or personal responsibility. Go clog up dem ICUs!

I rest my case.
