I’m grimacing ever so slightly at the prices, as this is about twice what I pay for lip gloss, but I think these people may be on to something. My preference for lip gloss is mainly because lipstick gives me the unnatural “LOOK AT MY LIPS!” feel and look that I don’t go in for. The one thing I don’t like about lipgloss though, as others have pointed out, is that it’s too sticky. Nothing worse than the wind blowing, and your hair getting trapped on your mouth.
MAC lovers, is their lip gloss heavy? I’ve stayed away from MAC products, because they all seem very thick and clunky. Their foundation made me feel like I was wearing a mask.
Yeah, I hated their foundation. I started out wearing a lot of MAC products when I started wearing make up but I gravitated away because I found it kind of heavy. The lip gloss wasn’t super heavy, though. I didn’t really like it though because it didn’t stay on very long. I just never found it anything special for what I was paying.
Yeah, I think if I’d been looking at a $20+ lipstick for myself I’d have said “No way, too expensive”. But now that I’m used to using my gift tube, I think it’s worth the price and I’d be willing to pay that much for a replacement. (I wear makeup rarely enough that I’ve been using this tube for a couple of years and am nowhere near the end of it.) I own a couple of cheaper lipsticks, but they pretty much just stay in my drawer. The Shiseido is what I carry in my purse.
Both. Often at the same time. My favourite lippie is a red number from Chanel called ‘Fire’.
Let’s say I don’t mind drawing attention to my lips. And I don’t mind if lipstick makes me look older. And I really don’t care if the best shades of red are going to slowly kill me with lead poisoning. I just love the full on, traffic-stopping, trampy red look.
I’m envious. Every shade of red I put on turns bright fuschia pinky purple. Or I look like I got into my mommy’s makeup kit. Tried every variation, no luck. (I loved how Christina Applegate could wear bright red lipstick on Married With Children and look so beautiful - and she so pale and blond to begin with.)
Lip gloss feels too sticky so I usually wear the long lasting lipsticks. I wish I could find a “my lips, but better” shade that was long lasting and didn’t disintegrate into shreds and feel gross.
Lipstick lines offer different textures as well as colors. The MAC order form was acting wonky; check out Urban Decay. Their lipsticks come in Full Coverage, Semi-Sheer & Sheer. The last one is most like gloss but the middle is also more natural looking. MAC has similar classifications plus “Matte” format–very dramatic but very hard to wear. You can also select Textures: Cream, Sheen & Shimmer. Urban Decay colors tend to be dramatic & the lipsticks are expensive; check other brands to find what options they offer–beyond color. Mac has shops everywhere so you can test before buying. I still like Revlon a lot.
I remember the old days of Lip Gloss–Yardley, anyone? You just end up with a goopy finger.
Yep. Yardley Pot o’ Gloss was what I was referring to. I wore nothing else for years. Mind you, I’m old enough to remember wearing white lipstick. Not a flattering look.
Clear lipgloss over my lipstick. (Not a ton of it – just enough to give a slight shine) I wear make-up everyday, even if I’m not going anywhere. I guess I’m just too girly for my own damned good.
I generally agree with Diosa and go more for gloss, but I’ll often do a lipsticky-thing with gloss over it. I’ll do a more matte plain lipstick if I’m going for a retro pin-up look with red lips and a classic subtle lined eye, though.
Burt’s Bees tinted balms for everyday, Mary Kay lipstick in Sagewood…the old formula, I bought three and they last forever…for dressy. I want my lipcolor to be my natural color, just more, so neutrals work best. The Mary Kay lipstick isn’t annoying or sticky…I just forget to put it on sometimes. It got cold today so I got out a wool blazer to wear, and discovered my lipstick in the pocket. So i guess I haven’t worn it for a while!
I wear both. But there is a middle ground now-I have these little lip lacquer pots from both Laura Mercier and NARS that have more pigmentation and stick than traditional lipgloss without being as drying as lipstick.
I put carmex on before I apply anything to my lips so I’ve never had the drying problem people cite for lipstick.
Lipstick is more understated (on me) than lipgloss.
Lipgloss is shiny and never anywhere close to my actual lip color so “nude” and “sheer” don’t really exist for me and it’s really, really shiny. My lips are big enough without turning into big giant reflectors.
Lipstick comes in matte. Even when it’s really dark, it looks less ostentatious than lipgloss.
