Well, good. I want to know who sponsers me so that I may bestow many thank-you’s upon them, compose epic poems in their honor, and wipe their chin after eating soup. Well, perhaps not anything so grand or silly but surely would I like to know who gave me more Dope. That’d be cool to know, IMHO.

I’ve been toying with an idea this afternoon and thought i might run it by a few people before emailing an administrator.
I see we are all going to get new tags – ones that say CHARTERED MEMBER, which is all fine and dandy I suppose although it does seem to smack of officialspeak. I was wondering about the possibility of introducing a new category which dopers can opt for (and opt out of) on their user control panel.
I would like the option to label myself as a DONOR DOPER or something similar. Then when someone clicks on my name and accesses the drop-down menu, right below where it says email j_sum1 there is an item that says request sponsorship. Clicking on that would access a page with my email address and a brief note from me explaining who I might want to donate five bucks to. From an initial email contact we can arrange for membership using the Ed Zotti method.
Here are some advantages:

[li]I can choose to sponsor say three new kiwi dopers and opt out when I wish.[/li][li]It enhances the general friendliness of the site; especially if newbies know that there are a lot of doper who are generous enough to both welcome them to the boards and pay their first subscription.[/li][li]I might be wrong, but I can’t see that it would be too taxing on the system.[/li][li]There are newbies around without credit cards and who wouldn’t want to go through the hassle of international money orders etc, Newbies who might otherwise drift away but who would stay and contribute if given a bit of a bump.[/li][li]It would diffuse the paid members only kind of stigma which may arise.[/li][li]It would encourage a bit more person to person emailing, which is less strain on the hamsters and a way of getting to know other dopers even better.[/li][/ul]
Disadvantages:

Anyway, your thoughts please. Does this idea have any merits? Is it worth pursuing? Any further suggestions or refinements before I email an administrator with the idea?

Does anyone know people that you know can’t afford it but you don’t think will ask? You could privately email them and ask (if you’re close enough to them) and that way they could be sponsored but not feel publicly embarrassed.
And then we could gather around them chanting “one of us, one of us” while we forcibly register them!
I don’t have anyone in mind for sponsoring but I am specifically interested in anyone in the Alabama area, or the Deep South in general. Got to keep that IQ level up, ya know. Of course, I would gladly sponsor a Yankee or furriner as well!

I’m assigning one of the anonymous sponsors or myself to anyone who e-mails me or posts to this thread. If none of the other people who’ve posted offers here get a request from anyone, but would still like to help, e-mail me and I’ll try and find you someone.
While I’m not going to name names, I will tell you that I’ve only recieved three sponsorship requests so far (and have been able to fill them all). The number of sponsor offers has far outweighed that.
Here are my thoughts, If I was to start such a thread it would read;

By posting in this thread I will state that I am willing to host at least one subscription.
All that I need is an e-mail communication from a current member with their username and password. I will then process their new 1 year subscription at the current rate of $4.99. I will do this with as many requests as I wish, whether it be 1 or 87. I will take members on a first e-mail basis, without prejudice to the member. I will reply to those whom I am not able to help because I have already reached my quota.
I will then, never at any point, release this information to any other person(s) or hold this over the head of my sponsored member(s) for any reason at any time.
After I have fulfilled my own personal gift subscription quota I will immediately post to this thread to let others know that I am finished hosting guest subscriptions without letting on to whom or how many I processed.
Any interested hosters may now post to this thread stating that they will take on a membership for the first people that e-mail them (up to their quota).
Naturally, the signup period isnt untill the 21st so the actuall payments wont take place before then. However, the communication and the exchange of information can take place before then.
Please confirm that the host member is able to help you out before you send your password to them.
This thread may also be used to help someone pay who doesn`t have a credit card or other means of auto payment.**

One poster mentioned difficulties they were facing because they were under eightteen and had no access to either a credit card account or PayPal. So I figure as long as it doesn’t involve drinking hemlock, I’m willing to do my part in corrupting the morals of the young. And unlike certain presidents I could name, I’m willing to put some money into my “No Child Left Behind” program.
