Barbra Streisand threatened to leave the country if the elder Bush got re-elected in 1992.

In 2000, Eddie Vedder, Robert Altman, Kim Basinger, Alec Balwin, and Pierre Salinger vowed to flee from George W. Bush. Allegedly, so did Martin Sheen, Rosie O’Donnell, Matt Damon, Whoopi Goldberg, Ed Asner, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, but those statements couldn’t be confirmed. Salinger was one of a handful of people who actually did leave. Good riddance, Pierre; don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

I’m having trouble finding out which celebrities threatened to emigrate in 2004, but I seem to Remember Whoopi Goldberg doing this.

Apparently, Susan Sarandon has vowed to flee the country if McCain wins.

Will we ever get past the notion that a dollar is such a huge amount of money? I’m barely old enough to remember candy bars costing a dime. A dime could obviously buy a lot more then than now, of course, but even then we didn’t think it was something to cry over if that was the price of some candy.

No, it’s not hyperbole.

My wife is recovering from two surgeries: 1.) to remove her colon and 2.) to construct a substitute “pouch” using her ileum. My five-year-old son is mildly autistic and requires forty hours a week of outrageously expensive ABA therapy that the state of California and the Culver City school district provide. Most people in our position could never dream of leaving, since, even if one were so inclined, one would have to forgo insurance, state, and federal disability benefits both for my wife and my son.

We’re forgoing those. In fact, I’m leaving a dream job as a tenured professor at a large research university to take a far less prestigious position in another country. My wife and son will still get their benefits, although we will, when all is said and done, have had to pay far more out of pocket than we would have had we stayed. That’s just how the cookie crumbles.

And that’s how badly we want to live in a democracy.

And it’s all due to people like Bricker.

I think we should make a law that people who say they’re leaving the country if their candidate loses, should then really have to leave the country if their candidate loses. Yes, the penalty for this level of hysterical inanity should be actual deportation. We all will miss you very much.

If we did, who would make movies? Remember all the Hollywood dorks who claimed they were going to leave the country if GWB got elected? They’re still here and still making major fools of themselves.
