In some ways octopus raises some important questions. He and his ilk are a major part of the problem mentioned. They are also unpleasant posters in general and often wished to the cornfields, (un)fortunately without effect.
It’s difficult to see immediate solutions to either the specific or general problem of undesirable molluscs that wouldn’t be draconian, and intellectual tree stumps like octopus see that as a victory for their absolutist ideals. They’re like if an antibiotic resistant flesh eating bacteria could taunt you. “Ha ha! You can’t get rid of me without sawing off your arm and that means my destruction of your tissue is actually a good thing!”
Part of the so-called problem? I very rarely stray into the adolescent lady ogling threads. I stick, mostly, to minimum wage, politics, a couple contentious but fun topics, good music like Prince and Wham! threads, etc. I’m the voice of reason around here.
At the risk of being piled-on, I am gonna post. I am female, and a noob. So take that into consideration. I cannot for the life of me figure out why, at this day and time, we have to ask for the right to feel safe and not squicked out? I was an early poster in one thread saying; ‘just ignore’. I see now how wrong I was. Thanks to my sisters for taking the hits and explaining. I must admit I am in a bubble IRL. I have never been put upon for being female. I don’t think.
I hope the good/real men on this board continue to back up the females, therefore making the bad actors a minority and relieving the problem. A bright light is shining in the dark corners.
Guys, look, it’s not hard to admit you are wrong. No one will think less of you. You can learn a new way to be.
I really don’t think there’s one thing in the OP asking you not to post what you must. The OP is asking for people to understand how some of these posts might be offensive to the women who view them. You know, listening and understanding leads to consideration and cooperation. The reward is a better and healthier group.
I do think about what I post. Which is why I never make prison rape jokes, don’t participate in random unprovoked pittings, never flirt with the ladies, etc. Where I disagree with the “raffers” is that there is no place for “offensive” or personally disagreeable content. Especially with the language and personal attacks said delicate flowers engage in.
And that’s incredibly sad, because the board ends up as its own mirror, shining the same tired reflection of the same familiar face back and forth endlessly to itself while preening like Narcissus.
That seems to be it. The fact that you’re being piled on here supports the point made earlier, that this is nominally (and in part, actually) about offensive behavior of the sort described, but is also in large part about squelching opinions that certain people strongly disagree with.
My favorite is the idea that it is financially “disacuitous” to rent. Renters are all “losers” who live in roach-infested crack dens and spend all their money on spinning rims or something.
