The Dope is generally a place where just about anything can be discussed reasonably civilly (well…compared to other forums anyway).
But gender issues has always seemed to me to be the exception. It always seems to go down badly and I’m not exactly sure why. I’ve just over time learned to avoid those threads, or go in wearing three crash helmets.
Whether it’s a thread about men’s or women’s issues, it seems the majority of the responses are either trolls or people looking for something to be offended by.
Seriously. This is flippin’ Pit thread. Pittees and other onlookers who agree and disagree with the Pitting, who are directly involved and those who are not, post, and that is considered “telling” in some way?
There explicitly was an op statement that no rule change is requested, just that male posters think more about what they are posting and perhaps voluntarily alter their board personas (self-censor, whatever). That is not a subject for mods to comment on as mods.
Mind you if the proposition was that posting polls of Ginger v Marianne/Betty v Veronica/ or even the not recently done Velma v Daphne, or a thread asking for women’s opinions when they are in a place that uses female employees exploitively (scantily clad) or a thread bringing up an article that parodies male writers male character voices describing female characters, are covered under “don’t be jerk”, or that such threads should be verboten, then mod input and ATMB placement would be expected.
Either you didn’t read the previous thread and the ATMB thread or I don’t know.
The last pit thread was reported at least once (by me) asking for moderator assistance in resolving the issue. I don’t know that it was or wasn’t reported by anyone else. I’m not privy to that information and neither are you. The moderators chose not to get involved in the pit thread beyond noting that this isn’t the place for discussion of board moderation.
Frankly, I’m not at all surprised that none of the moderators would want to touch this with a 10’ pole when the last pit thread involved bigoted posters proclaiming that ALL of the male moderators were biased against women and none of them could be trusted. Talk about poisoning the well…
Try as I might, I just can’t muster any real self-righteous female outrage. A “Ginger or Mary Ann” type post simply doesn’t upset me. In fact, those kinds of posts make me think, “Were I gay, which one might I prefer?” LoL
Is there a smattering of assholes who do occasionally cross the line? Yes, I believe so, but I don’t feel the SDMB is a “board friendly” place for those kinds of people. Despite being openly female, I haven’t been approached or offended or bothered by anyone since I’ve been back and active. If it happens, I’ll simply report it.
It appears that this site has a pretty definitive male majority, so it is only natural that it has more of a male flavor. Hey, I’m in elementary education where females significantly outnumber males. It’s a “women’s world” believe me. It’s not an evil plot to oppress men, it’s just the natural result of a definitive female majority.
What’s horseshit is your stupid insistence on focusing on whether threads are “male-centric” or “female-centric.” Threads don’t have to be either for them to devolve into the kind of “death by a thousand cuts” which drive people away. e.g. a thread discussing a movie which inevitably sees the trogs come in and start talking about their opinions of the appearances of female characters.
