These posts seem to me (a man) incredibly condescending towards women. You appear to be saying that the two things that a woman can have going for her are sexual availability, and/or inherited (and limited) power supported by a massive infrastructure consisting mostly of men.
You seem to be missing the idea that women can rise as high and as fast as men through their own efforts – or at least they can where they are not held back by cultural forces.
Oh, and the name of the Greek play you were looking for is Lysistrata. It’s a play about a woman getting fed up with men and leading the other women to take control of the city’s resources.
I think you’re reading too much into it, and you’ll have to just take me at my word that no such subtext was intended.
(Maybe Queen Victoria was a bad example to use of a powerful woman because she “only” inherited her power [even though there are monarchs who are successful leaders and monarchs who are unsuccessful ones]…you can substitute Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi, or any number of other women.)

I second We Hunted the Mammoth, and also Echidne of the Snakes has discussed the phenomenon as well (though she blogs about a lot of things).
No, I didn’t take it as conscious malice, but I did see it as evidence of a mostly unconscious attitude, one that is probably just the accumulated residue of a lifetime of absorbing cultural male-centrism.

Thank you. That might be a little easier to deal with. And I never thought of myself of a wilting flower, but …there is this horrifying mix of self-loathing/suicidal resignation and virulent, homicidal rage in those threads. It just had this aura of malignancy to it.

I find it so weird that this community is struggling to come to terms with a few threads some find distasteful, when it’s already driven away pretty much every other group there is. There are no young people here. There are no conservatives. There are no poor people. Are there even any rural dwellers here? None I can think of.
