Mama didn't raise no quitter (a thread for smokers)

Ok, the sarcastic title aside, what about the rest of us?

I’ve been smoking since I was 13 years old, and I thoroughly enjoy it. I love cigarettes. I love smoking.

I’m an otherwise intelligent adult who just doesn’t want to quit smoking. Despite the increasing expense, inevitable health problems, and general difficulty of the life of a smoker, I just can’t motivate myself to even consider quitting.

Am I a dinosaur, or do I have company out there? Are there any other smokers who have never tried to quit?

Please refrain from preaching in this thread. I’ve already admitted it goes against all common sense. Despite appearances, I am an intelligent human being. I’m just looking for company here.

[sub]Non smokers and ex-smokers with clever anti-smoking quips and links and nothing useful to add are politely requested to find a quiet corner in which they may feel free to fornicate with themselves.[/sub]

Somehow I don’t think you’re going to get the support your looking for. We smokers are pariahs, you know.

I started smoking when I was 21. Quit for 2 years when I was 25. And now I’ve been a steady consumer of Camel Filters ever since. I’ve been surfing a lot of Bill Hicks and Denis Leary sites lately so my urge to quit is waning, but I think I ought to sooner or later - if for no other reason than for the savings. Every time I look at Satan’s sig I get pissed at myself for throwing all those bucks away.

best part about hicks is that he quit in his later years, but never got harpy about it, and was still pissy and funny.

myself, been smoking for 4 years now. started off with drum rolling tobacco, then became a camel man.

a few months later, marlboros were the cheapest brand (besides like GPCs or Jacks), and I’ve been a marlboro man ever since.

I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT TO DEATH!

IF I don’t get my early morning (or mid-afternoon) first cigarette, I am not a very nice boy. and when I take that first drag of the day, I love it I LOVE IT I LOVE IT!

gotta quit, but it’s so smooth and satisfying…

I’m pretty much with you, Gatsby. I started smoking the summer I was 12–24 years ago, now. I’ve had a couple bouts of quitting, but nothing that lasted more than a few days at a time. I enjoy it, and I don’t have any real urge to stop.

Health problems? My business, not anyone else’s. Social policy? I don’t give a flying frig about other people’s social policies. Disapproval of others? Tough shit–I’m not in the habit of taking a vote on how I live my life.

Like Jack said, the only compelling reason I would have to quit smoking would be the expense. (And, yes, I will automatically vote against any politician who supports raising cigarette taxes–not that there are any of those in my districts so far.) Maybe someday that will convince me. Until then, I’ll smoke 'em if I got 'em…and I always got 'em.

(This doesn’t mean I have anything against those who quit–good for them, I say. I’m just not going to join them.)

What y’all said. I’m with you 100 percent.

BTW, don’t feel bad about the lack of response so far–It’s not necessarily a lack of support. I almost didn’t post because y’all already said everything I would have and I usually avoid “me too” kinds of posts.

I’m with you guys. I smoke and I like it. I also collect table lighters, ashtrays, and cigarette holders.I’m into the whole thing. I also try to be considerate about my smoking, so I get a little honked off when some non- or former- smoker starts up about it. If I ever feel like quitting, I will. Until then, everyone should lay off.

My father, who smoked for something like 20 years, is by far the worst. He starts every phone conversation with “Are you still smoking?”(unless it’s Sunday. Then he asks me if I’ve been to Church). This is one of the reasons I haven’t spoken to him in months. Whenever he sees me, he insists on giving me a huge hug and then complains that I smell like smoke. Grrrrr. So so so so annoying.

My sister will get into my truck and bitch that it smells like smoke (she’s another quitter. Hell, she got me started!). If i’m giving her a ride somewhere, and I light up a smoke, she acts sooo put out by it. My feeling is that if she doesn’t want to breathe my smoke in MY truck, she can drive her damn self.

When I first bought my house, my mother and stepfather came over one day to help me with stuff. I bought lunch for all of us, and afterwards we were still sitting at the table and I lit up a smoke. My mom acted shocked that I was smoking in front of them - in MY house! I told her that as long as they were under my roof, they’d follow my rules, and I told them both to light up. That didn’t work, but they at least learned to shut about it. That’s really all I ask.

I smoke and I like it. I’m aware of the possible effects, but then I’m also aware of the effects of drinking too much.

A smoke after a meal is a must!
A smoke after great sex is a real must!
Reading a good book on a quiet afternoon and smoking is excellent!

I love the smell of good pipe tobacco in tobacco stores!
I like sitting in a restaurant after hours and talking with good friends over good coffee and cigarettes. I like to smoke when working on the computer – though most burn up in the ashtray.

I like to have a smoke when I get up in the morning and when I’m concentrating hard on doing something.

I started smoking in 1969. A pack cost 25 cents out of the machines – which were in every gas station in town, in the hospital lobby, and so on.

Thanks, Uncle Beer–every so often my brain slips into neutral and I forget what I’m doing.

(From too much nicotine? Hey, it’s possible.)

I can pretty much echo the OP. I also started at the age of 13, and although I know I should be full of self loathing for being a smoker, I just can’t work any up. I’ve seen the pictures of the diseased lungs. I try! Still nothing. I love my smokes. I love the smell of smoke in the air. I love my ashtrays. I love my Zippo.

sigh

Amen. I enjoy my smokes.

I am aware of the health hazards and promise not to sue the daylights out of everyone when I become ill.

I do not smoke in restaurants.

I do not smoke around pregnant women even if they insist on smoking.

I have no desire to quit smoking. I realize it’s a bad habit, but I do my best to keep the ills of my evil deed to myself.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s time for a smoke break.

So, how long is it going to be before Gatsby’s OP request is ignored and someone busts in here and starts preaching? It took one page before it happened in the “What kind of gun should I buy?” thread.

Anyway, I like smoking. I’m planning on quitting for my birthday next June, as my girlfriend hates it. But right now I’m enjoying it as much as I can in the time I’ve got left.

Former smoker here, and don’t start bitchin’ yet…

I loved to smoke! I would still love it! I have DREAMS about smoking! I never had any problem with smoking- that chronic bronchitis wasn’t nuthin…

Oh and jb_farley- how can you call yourself a REAL smoker if you can wait until afternoon for your first cigarette? Unless of course that’s when you roll out of the rack! I personally couldn’t lift my sorry ass out of bed until AFTER my first smoke of the day.

Sometimes when I’m feeling naughty, I go to Vegas and take big gulps of other people’s smoke. Not the same, but whatever.

And BTW, I smoke the occasional cigar, and love it. It doesn’t make me want to smoke again, because I don’t inhale the damn thing! My dad had a small stash of Monte Cristos (the illegal ones) and they were wonderful!

People who bitch about your smoking can go pound sand. Joke 'em if they can’t take a fuck.

Why do smokers seem to think we non-smokers just sit here wishin’ and hopin’ and thinkin’ and prayin’ for them to quit? I DON’T CARE IF YOU SMOKE. I don’t care if you burst into flames.

The only thing I ask is, please DON’T “blow some my way.” Other than that one quibble, go ahead, light up, smoke yerself silly and see if I get one gray hair over it.

I have been smoking for about 5 months. I love to smoke. Nothing is better in my life than a tub filled to my chin, a trashy romance and a nice camel filter. My husband yels at me when I smoke in the bathtub, but god dammit! leave my little pleaasures alone.

I also love to smoke in the car. It is very boring driving, yet calming and satisfying to smoke while in traffic.

I love having a cigerette about a half hour after I wake up. I sit on the stairs by my apartment, with my dog sitting next to me, and smoke while staring at the lake.

I love kissing a man after he smokes. It brings back memories of making out when I was a young teenager with one of the “bad boys” that smoked. Thank god, my husband smokes. I relish the taste. (sick of me I know)

I also like that during the day at my stressful job, I can take a break after dealing with many angry people and puff my stress away. It is a loveley feeling.

Gatsby, can’t say I blame you one bit.

I smoked for 14 years (on and off) moslty Marlboro, then Marlboro lights. I quit about 4 years ago (and don’t have the urge) but I love the smell of sigarrettes, sigars and pipes, and occasionally have a sigar with friends. But If I did not quit when I did, I may have been a smoker for life and enjoying it. For all those who smoke, and know the affects, no reason to stop (just like eating burgers and fries).

Oooohhh. tubagirl’s post reminded me that I hate kissing non-smokers. Yuk!

Does this make me a truly sick person?

Just had to ask, why is your husband mad about this? Is he afraid you’ll catch the bathtub on fire? I don’t see why this would be a problem.

But I have to ask. I’m a non-smoker. Never tried it and never want to. What I don’t understand is what is the pleasure of smoking? Is it the inhaling? The taste/smell of smoke? The rush of nicotine? What gives?

And I appreciate your considerations around us non-smokers! Thanks!

Freyr, to answer your questions …

“Is it the inhaling?” - Yes.

“The taste/smell of smoke?” - Yes.

“What gives?” - Generally my stamina after about a half a flight of stairs.

Also, I like the way the smoke looks when I exhale - I can do killer smoke rings.
